"Have I not done well?". The mandarin nodded, and went on, anit a few minutes later one of the punboats was away, conveying him to Contor. The bodies were still lying on the beach this morning, but the heads will be preserved by the officials at Kowloon as proof of the execution of the sentence. Thirteen of the nineteen victims belonged to a batch of thirty recently arrested at Macao on suspicion of being connected with the Nawas piracy, Four of them had been previously discharged by the Hongkong Bulborities, when arrested on the same charge. "Another was harded over by the Government to the Chinese auberties, having been arrested by Inspector Stanton in First Street. Two others were alleged pirates whinge headquarters were at Shau-ki-wan, whilst another e aple were brothers, and bad been arrested in connection with a projected "pracy on the steamer Seechow, last year. The old fellow with the full heard had confessed to being concerned in the piracy of the Greyhound and turned infermer, by which meant seven of the crews of the junks which took off the pirates from the Namod were arrested, besides the man

who was suposed to have shot Captalo Pocock. First Day,—TuRSDAY,' 7TH APRIL, The Frochow Spring Meeting commenced this afternoon, the weather being perfect, and. the course in capital condition, although not As Amoy was well represented very fast both in ponies and Jickeys, more interest than ucuil was taken in the races by nll, and the Fonchow "Sports," evidently with the intention of trying to beat such. Amay ponies as Dhingrag- gan,

Dinnon, and Cobweb, sent to Hongkong and secured Fochanter and Flight, but owing to the very muddy track, aber two weeks before the races with these pontes were placed hors de combat, the, former not starting at ejl during the meeting. Fanchow owners were afan unfor. tunate in having their lay' year's cracke grifün Monterey Lime, whilst Amay had to do without Cobweb; If all these nonies had been able to start the racing would have no doubt been more interesting, hat as it was, the meeting was most enjoyable one and some good sport was witnessed. Mr. Boyd carried all before him. hle ponies starting eight times and securing five wind, we seconds, and one third. Colonel Vans Wilton being next with three wins; Mr. Camera and Captain: Jacle registering two each.

The ball was set amlling by eight sprinter coming out for the April Stakes, which fell to Dunoon, late Unleren, a east-off of Mr. Sassoon's that ran well in Hongkong when dead lame. This pony, has greatly impmyed since last seen "In public, and although he went for two races, each day here, he did not show the signs of lameness that were so pripable in Hongkong. The Coast Stakes proved rather an easy win for Mainbrace but Ploughboy and Plitz ran well and were both cines up at the finish. The Amoy Cun looked like a certainty for Senegal until the last quarter, when Bravo came along with a grind rush and collared him on the post. the securing Mr. Bartleet his malden win. Mr. Boyd Janded Dunoon an easy winner in the Yuenfoo Stakes, and the Racing Stake's fell to Blitz who was very Judiciously ridden by Mr. Oswald, but if Bravo had kept more with his ponies in this tatter event the teruit would have been different. Dengriggan had an easy win in the Nental Stakes, which brought Amov'sories up to four for the day.

Second Day,-WIDNESDAY, 8TH APRIL Sport'was again first class, most of the events The weather was being keenly contested. favorable and the attendance large. Kulangay Cup was reduced to a match between Bravo and Vama, the former winning easily. The Miu Stakes produced a good race, Serenade and Ploughboy having a grand struggle down the straight, but the Amay pony held his own and won cleverly at last. The Race Fund Cup was considered an open race, such flyers as Mainbrace, Yarram, Danean and Titmouse all appearing to have fair prospects of suc cess. The finish was a very close one between Dunoon and Witchcraft, both ponies being capitally ridden, and the result was in doubt right up to the post, the roan winning by a short head. The Consolation proved an exercise gallop for Ploughboy, and then came the Champions, in which only two stables were represented Mr. Boyd's nair, Duncraggan and Dunoon, being opposed by Bravo. Duncraggan was, favorite ard after an uneventful mace he won easily. There were six starters for the Welter Plate, Serenade being freely backed against the field and he won cleverly, thus giving the Amoy ponies eight wins during the meeting, and as they only started ponies in eleven races, the average is's very good one.

THE STRATHENDRICK". **DEVONHURST ? COLLISION CASE.

The following decision was arrived at on the 8th inst. he the Marine Bard in Singapore appointed to inquire into the circumstances of the disastrous collision between the steamships Strathendrick and Devonhurst, in the Madura

Straits, on the 8th of last March

FINDING,

This Court having heard the evidence relating to the circumstances attending the collision Strathendrick, finds that sach collision occurred between the steamships Devonhurst nad

In Madura Straits about 1.15 am. on the 8th March, Rat, resulting in the total loss of the Sarathendrick, and of the life of Alfred Davidson, her second engineer.

There is considerable conflict of evidence as to the exact position of the vessels when the sider that there was plenty of sea room, this colision occurred, but as it is admitted on both

question does not appear material to the issue.

The accounts given by the two parties as to the facts leading up to the collision materially differ.

The Chief Officer of the Devonhurst, who was in charge of his ship from midnight until after the collision did not watch the light approaching with sufficient care, and the Court is of opinión that in starboarding bis helm under the circum stances he committed a breach of Article 16 of the "Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea." The Court therefore adjudge that the cretificate, No. 89,458, of Charles Horne be suspended for two years.

When the frwis drimped Dunernggan tenk the lead at a slow nace with Duroon close alongside and Brave lying dff about two lengths behind. The race proved a procession from start to finish. Donnon made a sport in the las quiter of a mile, but could not overtake this year's Hongkong Ashley Cup winner, and Bravo's severe mit "and-a-half in the early part of the day quite put him out of the hunt, Dancragran beld viride of place all the way and won easily, Tiínes, 36, 1.12, 1.40, 2.15 and 1.50. The Crust exonerates the masters of both stances leading to the collision, and also finds that no blame is attributable to any of the survivors for the loss of the life of the second engineer of the Strathendrick who, from the evidence, probably went down with the ship, while endeavouring to save his effects. The Court is also of opinion that after the collision everything that was possible to be done to save life was done by the officers of the ships.
