In the preamble of this precious Ordi- nance we are told that it is expedient to. consolidate and amend the law relating to gambling and common gaming houses and lotteries," and the reason why this is expedient is because the wording of a section of Ordinance 13 of 1888 has been considered rather ambiguous and has led to different decisions from the magisterial bench. And that hall. There has been no increase in common gambling in Hongkong for the past fifteen years outside the mushroom crop of so-called Chinese Clubs which have sprung up in all directions, to whose existence we have so frequently directed the attention of the Government and insisted on the supervision of the Police. GOOD whisky to those who like that genuine product, and their name is legion in this colony is an exceptional treat in these days of whole sale adulteration, and low prices. But good whisky is to be ablained nevertheless, and doubtless in most of the leading establishments In Hongkong. Messrs. Caldbeck, Macgregor & Co. have sent us samples of a new brand, n Canadian whisky, bottled by Hiram Walker & Sons, of Walkerville, Ontario, which combines all the qualities of first-rate and properly matured whisky. The nge of the liquor is stamped and certified on every bottle, so that the purchaser knows exactly what he is buying, and can make little mistake either as to quality or price. The sample we have "gone through" is most mellow and pleasant-tasted, and we are certain will commend itself to all who give it a fair trial. MRS. At length, about 5.30, the stream of messengers between the Yamen and the shiny were reen returning, fallowed by a high officint dressed in red, riding on a venerable pony, and attended by a body of heralds and guards. The soldiers on the beach began to clear a space in Aceldama, and my comrade and myself clambered on to a sort of mud-and-pebble shanty which aff vrded u central view of the clearing. As the procession advanced along the somewhat distant pier wa could see a crowd of boats patting off from twe of the gun-vessels and rowing quickly towards on. As they were beached the degen soldiers in each hauled out one two pilable-looking objects, whom we could see, even through the thick dirt which coated their faces, were grey with terror. The man who could not walk was brought ashore squatting in a big basket,” ard was tumbled out in a line with his eighteen fellow-victims. He seemed to be in a state of collapse, for on being ret on his knees he at once keeled over on his face, and, being unable to regain his equilibrium on account of his hands being tied, remained grovelling until lifted for the fatal stroke. As the long line of victims was being Earranged, which was done amid much vocifcm- tion on the part of the masters of the ceremonies, the mounted official and' his suite of attendants drew up at one end. and the excitement. grew Intense.
