bim's copy of the repert. I only made the report for the Canton Insurance Co.
By his lordship What did Mc. Arnold want with it?
Witness-I cannot far.
Continuing I act by Veritas rules with res pect to chasing of ships. I looked at the Parig to ascertain if she was a good risk for. Insurance, The question was her sea worthiness. I did not consider ber Et to carry any cargo whatsoever. For the Canton trade A vessel must be very safe indeed. There were defecte in the vessel which rendered her unfit for insurance. My report had nothing to with pas- sengers. I did not make the report for the ship- ping companies. I was on board twice or thrice whilst she was at Wanchal. I de not think the Court of Survey could arrive at any satisfactory conclusion with respect to her bottem if they bored twenty-seven hojes in the cement.
|
By a juror I have been a marine surveyer alace 1882. I knew Mr. James. I never examined any ships with him. I never examined. the Pilipinas with him or yet any other steamer. He was naval constructor here, but his duties were no more than that of a draughtsman. I should not say he was a man of much experience. He might ses to repairs with respect to the Reet, but he docs no constructing.
His lordship A ship being in dock, I ask you as a practical man, do you not think it would be unfair to make a report dated the sist when you referred as to how you found her on the tyth?
Witness-Our object was to make a report for insurances.

Captain
His lordship-Do you know that Burnie bad passed her in June 1856 ?
Witness-Yex, for river service. John Walince sald-I am an from skip-builder in the employ of the Dock Company. I remem- ber, the Pasig coming into Kowloon dock the 28th February, 1889, aftes bring in collision. Her stem was broken and fire plates indented on either side.. Those plaies ware taken out, and two keel plates. The plates were next to the stem in a vertical position. I did not notice any of the plates next to them. New plates were put in. The plates produced were taken out of her because of being fractured. Their thicknesses are as follows :-5/16ths 4/16 full, 3/16ths fall, 3/16 fuel, 4/16111. The butts and under-frames 4/16 he fall, 4/16 two kest. plates 7/16ths, & little thin in the centre. I am not certain of the last plate measurement. All those "plates were below the mala deck. The thick nosies I have mentioned I consider quite thick enough for a vessel of passenger traffic. Mr. Wagner superintended the repairs. There were no other plates removed. I do not know whether any other plates were ordered to be taken out, because they were too thin.
A
By a juror-1 cannot say that it is the rule of the dock to keep old plates taken out of vessels. Cross-examined. The China was on the slip way with a broken stem at the same time, the Pasig was in dock. The plates produced were under the water some twenty-four hours before being taken out..
By his lordship. There is no perceptible difference in the plates since the time they were taken out. have been seven years in the Dock Company's service. I never had anything to do with the repairs of the Parle previously. 1 do not think the was in Kowloon Dock before.
At this stage the Court adjourned till 10.30 a.m.-to-morrow.

THE KIDNAPPING CASE,
INDE IN A "IZILE."
1. The two Chinese women, Li Kau, nged 40, and Wang Pak, aged 36, were again brought up at the Police Court to-day charged with decoying a girl named Li Yung, 14 years of age, away from the custody of her mother; onecond count, with detaining the said Li Yung for an unlawful purpose against her will; and on third count, with robbing the said Li Yung of certain jewellery and a bank deposit note of the value of $270.
On the present occavien the case came before both the magistrates, Messra, H. E. Wodehouse and A. G. Wise, who read over the whole of the evidence previously heard, wherein it was shewn that the compliant was locked up in a room on the ground floor of Mr. William Legge's house, in Robinson Road, where she was found and released by a Chinese detective on the 3rd, instant.

Mr. W. Legge, who it was alleged visdd the Bank deposit nose, was not examined, seither was the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank cleik, whogara the woman into custody when she went to the bank for the purpose of cashing the deposit note, In fact no further evidence was called to-day, and the magistrales after private consultation discharged the prisoners in the following manner:-
Li Yang, the complainant, was recalled and Mr. Wodehouse addressed her through an inter- preter as follows:

A terrible blow is the death of the Duke of Luchtembourg. The French Governmeal, keenly anxious to pay a compliment to Rusin, requested that the service, which, was to have inken place yesterday in the Russian church in Rue de Darn, should be postponed till to-day, that military honors might be accorded him.
