THE act of dying, it is now ascertained, is ab- solutely free from saitering, is really unconscious, insensibility always preceding it. Any anguish that may attend mortal Illness cesses before the close, as thousands who have recovered after hope had been surrendered have borne: witness. Sudden and violent death, shocking to the senses, may not be, probably is not, pain- fist to the victim. Drowning, banging, freesing, falling from a height, polsosing of many kinds, beget stupor of numbness of the nerves, which have met with such accidents, and survived them, testify to that.

WE are informed by the agents (Messm. THIS morning, after the Kiukiang had turned the point at the western extremity of Mucuo on which stands the thing known as the Barra fort, and got opposite the Praya Grande, a Chinese passenger, tired and wearied of the troubles of this wicked world and having no Promise to Hongkong-threw blinseif over board. There was great commotion on board the old bone-shaker-you bet. The person suicidally inclined could swim, and as the water was evidently not too warm and the great unknown didn't prove quite so attractive as he imagined, he tried the game for all it was worth, And he was supported in every way possible by the Kiukiang. Capt. Clarke lost no time in bringing the ship to, throwing life buoys over board, and lowering a boat. All was of no avail, however, as hefore the boat could reach the struggling lunatic his strength bad given way, and he sank to rise no more. THE Sith ordinary annual meeting of the Punjom Mining Mockery, on Monday next, will be a very extra-ordinary one if the indications on the Rialto are anything to go by. A fortnight ago the directors informally gave out that the accounts were ready, and they were "only waiting for Mr. Becher." That gentleman whose literary attainments are so dear to this Colony-was complaisant enough to turn up here nine days ago, after having, we may reasonably believe, a very glit-edged time in London at the shareholders expense. And after nine days labor the directors have to-day been delivered of the interesting report which, with the anesense of humor that has always characterised them, they find "pleasure "in laying before their victims. The man who can find pleasure in this report, with the shares at $4 and no takers, could Joke with his executioner. Weshall deal to detail with the fascinating document, and Mr. Becher's own lite booklet, later, when wo will endeavor to show how certain reports are made by burst gas-bags.

ONE of the officers of the A. and S. Highlanders, who recently returned from a shooting expedition to the Regimental News, from which we extract the following-After a very long and weary march through deep mud and heavy rain we reached Prabat late at night and found quarters with the priests of a temple there. To our great disappointment we found that all game had moved further inland, but good accounts. were given of whatwe might expet further In the temple we discovered to our surprise that one of the most valued possessions wAN KO old American clock. How it got there is rather a puzzle, but they prized it highly because they did not underst nd it. We wound it up, much to the delight of the priests, who thought we had performed a miracle, and we also quietly set the alarum for midnight, so doubtless the story le spreading over Slam that Ruddha one night answered the prayers of bis faithful, servants One day the in an unknown tongue.,.. crowd were rather too inquisitive and we desired to make them more; so producing a bottle of smelling salts we told the head priest to sniff hard; this he did, and left suddenly. A similar speedy retreat was made by all those who tried it.

The Adjutant and myself were on one occasion lost in the jungle and proved the theory that one proceeds, in circles when in a fog, or wherever one has lost one's bearings. It would have been quite ridiculous if it had not been fairly serious to us. We seemed to purposely contradict each other incessantly, and went very near to losing patience with each other. Several times we returned to our original starting place, and had quite given up all hope of reaching camp that day, when we were discovered by search parties sent out to look for us,

Mr. J. Sampson suggested an alteration in the system of training. There were a num er of new members who were anxious to row in this year's Regatta, but they had been unable to practice during the summer owing to there being no B class boats. To enable them to take part in the forthcoming Regatta it was necessary that they should have at least tour week's training for the Chairman's Cup under a good coach. The new men could only
