Another case may be instanced, whercią. A rich girl disliking her guardian, went to the hospital with the intention of marrying a dying man, thinking that as a widow she would be freer and have more control over her estate. She married a man seemingly at the point of death U but the men recovered, and tho.wife. brought suit for cruelty and fraud.

The complaints of the poor husbands were not quite so varied, but the following cases show that Wives were not without a taste for devillab crucity:~~

Defendant violently upbraided, plaintiff and sald to him: "You are no man at all"-thur causing bim mental suffering and anguish.

Plaintiff says: "My wife refused to keep my. clothing in repair. She even refused to cook and never sewed on my buttons." A. witness 8,844.13 testified that he had seen plaintiff with only one button on his vest. Plaintiff farther alleged that $274.051.20 | bis wife would not allow him to go to fires at night; that if he went she would keep him awake until three o'clock quarrelling.

The Divorce Bill now being discussed by the Legislative Council of New South Wales pro- vides that the courts may dissolvo marriage, pot only for adultery, but for habitual drunkenness, neglect to provide, desertion, habitual cruelty, and other causes. the trouncing of a woman with a prop-stick as wholesome fun, nor bauling her round by the bair of the bead as mistaken fondness. There are other forms of playfulness which are sometimes Indulged in that may be viewed differently. There is cruelty mental, cruelty moral, and crucity physical; we might perhaps add also cruelty to the feelings. The question does not, however, admit of being summed up in this fashion. What is cruelty to a pretty woman might be merely a charitable attention if applied to a plain ont. When we were in America, last year a book was Issued at Washington on the subject of Divorce and Marriage Laws. It was prepared under a special Act of Congress, and contains much Interesting Information. We made at the time some extracts giving the facts which were held by some of the State Courts to sustain the charge of cruelty. The selections were made not because the items were more serious than the others or more ridiculous, but simply because they were short and pithy. The following are complaints made by women for which divorces

were granted ::

Plaintiff alleges that defendant does not wash himself, thereby infileting on plaintiff great mental anguish.

Defendant would not permit plaintiff to walk on the streets, with her relations; he spoke disrespectfully of her, calling her a "trip/k

Plaintiff'says she is subject to nick keadaches,

that grow worse when she small tobacco. Defendant uses tobacco, and thus aggravates her headaches,

Defendant was guilty of cruelty in mot providing A supply of water at his hogao, and in mot repaliing the said house so ps to make it comfortable.

Defendant would not support plaintiff, and, when requested to do so, replied that he would| not work his " toenails off for any woman.”. *Defendant cut off my bangs by foros "

My husband would moyer cui kla'tse-nails, and I was scratched very saverkly oyczy night, jspecially as he was very restless
