He hoped that, in passing sentence, his lordship would take into considera- tion the youth of the prisoner and the entire; absence—as shown in the evidence adduced at the Police Court-of any desire to erade justice by running away from the Colony. His lordship fa addressing the prisoner expressed sorrow at having to perform a very painful duty which, after taking due notice of all that had been urged by the learned counsel in his behalf, was to sentence him to three years' imprisonment with hard labour.

DUAL KIDNAPPING.

Chan Alook was charged with having taken away a child of five years of age from the cus tody of his parents on the 15th April last. A second count charged him with taking the child for the purpose of stealing a silver anklet from the person of the child; and a third with the larceny of the said silver anklet.

The Attorney General explained that the prisoner was charged with an offence which is somewhat common in this Colony it should, nevertheless he regarded as a very serious offence. The child in question, a boy of about five years of age, was playing on the street when the prisoner persuaded the child to accompany bim for a walk to see some such pretty things," boy. The parents reported the matter to the By this means the prisoner got possession of the police. Next morning the complainant met the prisoner with the child in the street. In this case it was shown that, shortly after running away from the last complainant, the prisoner got hold of another little boy and took him on board a junk which was about to sail.

The mother of the child, which was about 5 years of age, a Chinese detective and Inspector dictment which charged the prisoner with Hennessy gave evidence in support of the in- feloniously stealing the said child.

The jury found prisoner guilty.

His lordship passed sentence of three years for the first offence, in which the prisoner was convicted on two counts; and two years for the second offence-the terms to be concurrent.

The amount expended during the past season' on repairs to the boats has been rather heavier than usual.

It was thought advisable before the Regatta (on the principle of a stitch in time saver nine) to send the six fours and four Double Sculling pairs 42 Class over to the Dock Company to have them thorougbly overhauled, repaired and painted, which was most efficiently done, and the thanks of the Club are due to the Dock Company for so kindly undertaking the work and only charging cost price for same.

REPORT OF THE BATH-HOUSE SUD-COMMITTEE. |

The Bath House has been overhauled as usual and, with the exception of several decayed

piles, is in good repair.

The Committee have been unable to learn anything definite as to how long the Bath House will be allowed to remain in its present position, and they have thought it undesirable to incur more expense in repairing it then has been actually necessary for the safety of the structure, and the comfort of bathers.

The Aquatic Sports were held on the 23rd and 24th August, and the various events were well contested by a large number of competitors-it is a matter of regret, however, that more of the older members did not compete.

A. G. STEPHEN, Į Sub-Committee. J. M. LAING, RIPORT OF THE GYMNASIUM SUB-COMMITTEE The rain-storm of the 29th and 30th May last caused a partial collapse of the back wall of the Gymnasium, and the hall was flooded thereby to the height of about one foot-the water lifting the flooring, which had to be re-laid entirely.

number of members up to the 30th April. To our regret, Staff Sergeant Mills left the Colony in the beginning of February, his term of service having expired, and the esteem in which he was held by his pupils was shewn, on their part, by the presentation to him of an address and a memorial. We succeeded in retaining the services of his successor, Staff Sergeant Tennant for the remainder of the season and it is pr posed to again secure his services, if available, after the summer.

At the Amateur Athletic Sports held at the Happy Valley on the 8th March, a competition was included for exercises on the Horse, but we regret to say only two entered. The Cup was won by Mr. W. Jackson.

An intended competition in Gymnastic and Defensive exercises, and Boxing did not come off on account of insufficient entries; it is pro-

better or truer sportsmen than their confrares in the North, although there can be no doubt that the spirit of betting--that absolutely necessary con- comitant of successful racing all the world over, is immeasurably stronger in the British colony than in the Cosmopolitan settlement; nor am I disposed to entirely agree with the argument that it is the frequency of race meetings in Shanghai that accounts forthe comparatively limited general interest exhibited; but be the reason what it may, racing in Hongkong, with all our dis advantages, and up to date their name have. been legion, is keener, less mercenary, and of a more thoroughly sporting type than it is in Shanghai.

The Hongkong, Jackey Club might, however, imitate with advantage many of the regulations and customs of the Shanghai Race Club, especially in the treatment of visitors nind during race days.. Every possible courtesy is shown to strangera by the executive of the Shanghai Race Club, as well as by private mèmbers; not only are tickets of admission to the Grand Stand provided, but polite invitations to the daily Club tiffing are invariably forwarded, and any information on racing matters is frankly and freely given." No doubt when the New Grand Stand in the Happy Valley has become an accomplished fact, and that will be at no far distant date, the Hongkong Jockey Club will endeavour to extend to visitors similar courtesies and hospitality, so freely ten- dered to Hongkong "sports" at Shanghai and the Coast Ports. There is one very important privilege which the Shanghai Stewards retain, and which I shall endeavour to introduce here at the next meeting of the Jockey Club-that is with reference to electing visitors as qualified to ride during the meeting. By one of the rules of the ride unless he is a member of the Club Hongkong Jockey Club no person is qualified to

ridiculous restriction, in my opinion, which bears very hardly on naval and military officers who may be here only temporarily, and on visitors generally, as before they can be qualified to ride they are mulcted in a heavy entrance fee and a year's subscription. The working Stewards of every meeting, that is the Judge, Clerk of the Scales, Starter, and C. C., should be empowered to coucede to any qualified visitor the privilege of riding during the meeting without payment of any fee, and I am convinced that an alteration of the present rule to meet this suggestion would both work, well and meet the views of the sporting community generally, besides being bighly appreciated by visitors.

The Shanghai Grand Stand, although a vast improvement on the ramshackle structure in the perfect. It struck me that the accommodation. Happy Valley, is still a long way from being for ladies was susceptible of great improvement, and on the steps of the Stand, the coign of Vantage from where most of the talent plant lost to sight after entering the straight until themselves during a race, the ponies are actually ·

opposite Belle Vue, Surely some arrangement could be made to have the trees removed

that obstruct a full view of the race-course from this popular and convenient stand-pointi The coffee-room; ladies' rooms, etc., are very well arranged, and leave very little ground for fault-finding, but I was very much struck with the altogether inadequate accommodation provided for the general public. Members of the various clubs and their friends, as well as visitors from other ports, have everything they want, but for outsiders the provision made is any- $4-341.00

thing but creditable: I met a couple of sea-going 16900 friends on the Inwn who insisted on my joining

56.00 them in a friendly tipple, and they took me to a. 250.00

place like a barn underneath the Grand Stand, 8.96

which I was informed was the public bar and 676 47 tiffia room. A disappointing attempt had been made to secure a sort of semi-privacy for the $5.501.43 tiffin-room by partially fixing it up with matting,

but it looked more like an enclosure for keeping $1,081 goats than for the proper entertainment of the 1,117.60 public. And yet there is ample space for the 205.60 fitting up of a comfortable bar and convenient 185 89 luncheon room, whilst the cost could only be 362.10 trifling, Mr. Rellly, of the Central Hotel, who 409 67 runs this part of the show, should see to it 341.55 before next meeting. 336.81

And now for a few words generally about the ponies and the racing. Taken as a whole 446.51 the grithms, as regards class, were in my opinion 6240 above the average and some of their performances 410.80 by the clock" were exceptionally good especially 541.69 considering that, owing to the weeks of wet weather preceding the meeting, nearly the whole
