Leaf in the Racing Stakes, but be finished with unflinching gameness, and I particularly observed that he made a very good show for a mile in the Shanghal Stakes when pitted against the fying Zephyr. Vaticinator is rather smaller than his stable companion, measuring only iz hands. 3 inches, but he is powerfully set up, and has all the appearance of a race-pony of high class. His performances at this meeting were most consistent, as after running second to Hero in the Griffins and Derby, he won the Manchu Stakes from a big field and then placed the seal on his racing fame by beating Noirmont and Zephyr in the Champions.

AN OLD SPORTSMAN, naturally expect a high-mettled racer to behave
Hongkong, 21st May, 1890. when surrounded by a ridiculous cavalcade of mafoos, mounted and on foot, worrying the pany's heart out. Hero has a good, honest, game. looking head, and he showed in the Derby, where Vaticinator made a gallant but hopeless attempt to cut him down, undeniable courage, and I have no hesitation in saying that he is a pony of the very highest class. His public form will stand analysing. In the Griffins, after being absolutely left at the post, he rushed through his field in the first quarter of a raile and won in a common canter, the official time of the race being a min. 29 4-5th secs, but Hero's actual time was about 1.27. Again, in the Derby-where the quality of Siranghai sport and sportsmen was painfully evident from the fact that for the principal classic race of the meeting the local opposition to the Griffins winner was composed of two useless "crocks," Obstructionist and Horribel, and the Hongkong-owned Vaticinator-the big skewbald, after racing down the last named, came away by himself and won with ridiculous ease in 3 min. 13/2-5th secs. Had he been ridden clean out, Teen-kwang's record of 3 min. 11 secs. would have easily been lowered. Nobody but Mr. Humphreys had the pluck to oppose Hero for the Chau-Shang-Kuik Cup, which he won hy a dozen lengths. in 2 min. 8 secs, official time-2 min. 61 secs, being the register of another reliable time-keeper. This was the skewbald's final appearance, as Mr. Saspoon, for reasons which I certainly failed to comprehend, did not start him for the Champions. Whether Hero is a belter pony than Zephyr is a question not easy to decide; both racers have their special advocates and supporters, and fairly sound arguments can' be adduced for each claimant to superiority but we shall bave to wait until the Shanghai Autumn, Meeting for a satisfactory solution of the knotty problem.
The old ponies that ran at the meeting were, with few exceptions, an exceedingly moderate lot. Zephyr is, of course, away at the top of the tree, and his successes in the Cathay Cup and Shanghai Stakes were easily achieved, whilst his defeat in the Champions was entirely due to the ridiculous fashion in which he was ridden. After losing more than half a dozen lengths at the start, Mr. Dallas made no mile altempt to get neay the front until, hall from home, and then he set Zephyr the impos. sible task of making up about ten lengths, and still he was only a length and a half from the winner at the finish. Eureka is a grand specimen of the Mongolian racer, but he was manifestly unfit besides being unsound, and broke down in the race for the Criterions. Noirmont's victory in the Roadsters' Plate and his second in the Champions may not amount to very much, the intter undoubtedly being a false run race, but Dr. Ruegg's sturdy cast-off will yet see better days if he remains sound. Hollyhock, one of the best trained ponies that faced the starter, landed the Hari Legacy Cup and Great Northern Plate without an effort, in fact, he won the latter event so easily notwithstanding a zib. penalty, that he must have proved dangerous in the Champions had he been slipped for that event. Dupcraggan scored a fluky victory in the Criterion Stakes-whichought tobave fallen to Fontenay, but Mr. John Peel's dun is only common cargo and much the same might truthfully be said about Vengeance, Forester, Vernal, Mercury and several others. Elegant is a handsome second-rater, and that grand stayer Volcano was slightly off colour, as were Visitant, El Dorado and Vigour. Dolores is a true race pony, and he won the Kiang-su Plate in hand. some style, and lie ought to have wen, if he did ngt actually win, the Ladies' Purse. Fontenoy's clever victory in the Consolation Stakes stamped him one of the best ponies at the meeting, and no success was more popular than that of the veteran Dunkeld in the half-mile Chu- Ka-Za Cup, the gallant chesnut, vigorously ridden by Mr. Macles, upsetting a very bot favorite in Wisdom,
The Company's fifteenth periodical balance sheet for the 14th year of Kuang Hsü (1888-89) was duly submitted and published. From the the 1st month of 15th year of Kuang Heu to the end of the same year (1889-90) constitutes the 16th rerird, the accounts for which show a gross profit balance of 569,000 and add taels. Deduct ing 301 000 and odd taels for depreciation of steamers and godowns, and 800, taels for dividends to sharchol ters, a total balence remains of 176,000 and odd taels, Out of this H.F. the Superintendent has sanctioned the payment of a bonus of ten per cent. to the staff of the Company, leaving a net balance of 167,900 and odd taels which, with the balance from the previous period, makes a total sum to credit of 722,000 and odd taels.
Of the original debts to foreigh merchants,— exclusive of payments already inade and pro- vision for instalments due to the Hengkong and Shanghai Bank; Jardine, Matheson & Co., and Russell & Co., there is still ou standing a sum nt 500,000 and odd tacts. The deposits from provincial authorities amount to 600,000 and odd taels, Shar ghai Sycee which are to be paid eff in full in the first month of the 16. year. H. E. 'the Superintendent obtained the sanction, of the Throne for the amount to be paid without interest.
Our Government gives support to
commerce in every possible way, and we Chinese merchants ought on that account to unite in loyal endeavours to progress.
The number of veisels belonging to the Com- pany in the previous period was 26. In the present year one steamer, the Hsinpu, has been added, The Kiangleen has been filled with new engines. Additional godowns have been erected at Shanghai and Tientsin costing altogether 203,000 and odd taels. The total capital of the Company as shown in the 15th period has been reduced 100,000 taels. The actual value of wharves, vessels, and godowns stands at 3770,000 taels. Compared with the 17th year of Ku.ng Hea (1885), when the present Directors took over charge, a total of $0,000 taels or thereabouts has been written off the capital
It will be gathered from some comments in the foregoing hastily written notes and remini- scences that I am not favorably impressed with the ethics of sport as understood and generally practiced in Shanghai. It was quite a new experience to me to see owners keeping back their ponies from races like the Derby, Shanghai Stakes, and Chau-Shang-Kuik Cup because these events, were regarded as certainties for Hero and Zephyr, That sort of thing is not sport, nor is if racing. In the face of this second-class peddling it was quite a relief to see Mr. Humphreys having a "go" at the assumed "cracks" race after race, and who can doubt that he got rewarded for his pluck in the Champions! And while on this uncongenial lopic I should like to know on what principle of aport, fairplay, or good breeding, Shanghai racing men preserve an insulting and solemn silence when Mr. Sassoon wins a race, and go raving wild like a parcel of boisterous school-boys when anyone else scores a saccess? Surely the invidious exhibitions that were auch a conspicuous element at the race meeting now under review, were unsportsmanlike, uncalled-for: and unjustified, besides being in execrable taste. may not altogether approve of Mr. Bassoon's racing raethods, but so long as bo "tuns square" he has a right to manage bis own affairs as he thinks best, and I certainly never heard even a whisper impegning the thorough straightforwardness of his racing policy. There Was Just about as much justice and true sporting spirit in the pointedly insulting and disrespectful conduct have just alluded to, as there was in the following paragraph, which appeared in Shanghai newspaper a few days prior to the TacesThe big lotteries at the Shanghai Club, the Masonic, and the Central Hotel have all fallen through this spring,⠀⠀ This is not because Shanghal is more hard up than usual, but because it has got tired of being fleeced by the horde of satellites of the leviathan "stable" "who twice a year, on plaseura" - and
The agreement of this Company with Jardine's and Butterfield's has termina ed by lapse of time. If they cut down freights, although our Company will in itself suffer loss, yet the mer chants and prople of China will greatly benefit by it. In the 2nd year of Kuang Hai (1875) when Chinese and foreign vessels lowered their rales, the Northern and Southern Trade Supe- rintendents advanced from official sources 1,700,000 trels to tide over the difficulty. To- day it is even more necessary for the Govern ment in its arrangements for the general welfare to devise efficient measures for our mutual pro- tection. We trust that all will exert themselves to the utmost in thought and deed, being not mindful of our Rulers' object in establishing this Company.
As usual four-tentha per cent. of the profits are a portioned for dividends to shareholders during the present period, making with the official interest a total of one per cent. to be paid rn the 15 day of the 3d month (April 19th). Copies of the books will be sent to their Excellencies the Superintendents of Trade and to the Super- Intendents of Customs at Tientsin and Shanghai; crpica will also be placed at the Company's Offices in Shanghal, Tientsin, Hankow, Foochow, Canton and Hongkong, for the inspection of the shareholders at those places.
Printed summaries of the Accounts will be
