Two Assistants also arrived in the steamship Benlarig and are at present "engaged in superintending the cleaning and fitting together of the various parts of the machinery:-un engine fitter is expected to arrive here in a few

weeks time.

When I arrived in Hongkong on the 17th March, 18ço, found that the buildings had been delayed by the unfavourable weather of January and February. Since then, however, the weather has been more favourable, and good progress has been made; it is hoped that every part will be roofed in before the beavy rains commence. The work of building the founda- tions for the Engines and Dynamos, also the settings for the Boilers, will be commenced immediately.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, SATURDAY, MAY 17, 1890.

Australia, Melbourne Punch publishes extra-is from the Teddywaddy Blister, as follows:- "We have received from our own corres- pondent at Bendigo a ab-marino cable_an- nouncing the resignation and retirement from -active politics of Prince Bismarck, the German Chancellor, The Blister is not a paper to blow its own horn or to go shaking itself in people' faces and dolling up with journalistic frills like that double-royal sheet of intellectual red-rust and hysterics, The Teddywaddy" Jackass, but we are glad to be able to say that at last we have got hard down on old Bizzy's so t corn and made him get up and jump. We guessed that leader of ours on Bully Bismarck and the Peace of Fu ope would buckle.the, Prince up, and make him want some retirement With reference to the Street Lighting with Are and a season of perfect rest. Our renders will Lamps; the Government have promised the remember that on that rccasion we gave the Company a contract for go lamps, and the Hon. large, quart-sucking German autocrat particu. the Surveyor General is at present deciding the lar beans; we let him know what the people positions where these lamps may be placed to of Teddywaddy took him for without re the greatest advantage. As soon as this is done, servation, and we flatter ourselves we made Mr. the work of erecting the poles and lines will be Bismarck feel bis spasms coming on pretty bad. 'proceeded with without delay, and it is hoped. The Blister has been bitterly opposed to Bis- that the Company will be in a position to supply the light by October.

The Government had also entered into a pro- visional arrangement with the Company for the supply of water to the Peak district, During last Autumn, however, they decided to adopt another scheme for pumping, and to carry it out themselves, compensating the Company for any loss they might incar from the withdrawal of the work. It has since been decided that the com. 'pensation is to take the form of an increased number of lamps for street lighting, 14 lamps being the extra number agreed upon.

The Electrical Machinery that has been pro- vided. both for the Arc lighting and Incandes- cent lighting, is of the best and latest pattern, much of it having been specially designed with a view to withstanding the trying conditions of the Hongkong climate. As these climatic con. ditions have been constantly kept in mind during the manufacture of the plant, it is confidently expected that all the troubles that have been ex. perienced in other places, have been guarded agninst.

In order to ensure a steady and reliable service of the Electric Light (both Arc and Incandescent) it is intended to always keep an Engine and Dynamo in constant readiness for. use, should one of those working fall from any

cause.

..

The safety of the consumer has also been specially considered, and to that end all apparatus, which it is necessary to place in houses and is likely, in any way, to prove a source of danger if meddled with, has been provided with cast iron

air-tight cases.

The Company have obtained a supply of Meters of the same class as those which are now being extensively used by the large London Companies, and which have so far, given satisfaction. In order to insure that their indica- tions continue to be accurate, the Company have purchased a set of the latest pattern Standard Measuring Instruments, by means of which all Meters will be checked periodically.

"Mick Morrisey, the mahogany-complexioned rabbit scalper of Mt. Deboobetic, gave a spread out at his miserable hark bumpy on Saturday night last, when he raffled a rusty, worm-eaten, warped, old King William shot-gun, worth eighteen-pence to a cheap museum, for five pounds, there being forty members at half- a-crown a shot. Morrisey did not seem to consider it worth his while to extend to us the and a free hand in the revels, but we were on the spot and had the pleasure of seeing his red-headed, freckled daughters bounding round in the airy dance like so many wild kangaroos in a branding yard, while their mother, who weighs half-a-lon, drank two gallons of Hawker's whiskey in the kitchen, and then fell on Wattle-bark Stephens and injured his ribs. Morrisey's raffles are always wanting in tone and style; none of our best people, would be seen

a shivoo where, the corn-beel is an black as a Tatcher gin and as tough as a red-gum sleeper, and where the M. C. wears shearing breeches and looks like a Tasmanian 1'g out on probation. There was nothing box ten or recherché about the spread,

et

and the dresses were late in the day ten seasons back, though, no doubt, Mrs. Morrisey imagined she was a swell daisy in a decollette overcoat and a pair of Mick's cast-off bluchers. We. advise Steve Green, who won the gun, to rent a Chinaman to let if off for him to save the expense of a death in his family."

The subjoined paragraphs are selected from the Blister's "News of the Day: "-

We believe in church going as a general thing, and encourage our readers to be regular at their devotions and to remember the plate, and whenever space permits we throw the hot edges of the Rev, Banger Baxter's sermons into our paper, but we want to remind Mr. Joseph Hacker that he can't try to figure as a gentleman by attending church in a new nallkeg hat and thirty-shilling finger-ring while he owes us for bis wife's funeral notice, two obituaries and s year's subscription.

SHAREHOLDERS IN DEFAULT Mr. Napier, on behalf of the Official Liquidater, then applied to have settled what is called the "B" list of contributors, which is the list of members, who, having ceased to be members of the Company within the year before the date of THE the winding up, still remained liable for calls on the shares, which have not been paid up by the present shareholders. From an affidavit by Mr. Hornby it appeared that the whole of the present shareholders had paid up with the exception of John Muir, who still remains on the register for 200 shares, and John Hunt of Hongkong who remained on the register for roo shares. It appeared that some correspondence had taken place between Mr. Hornby and John Muir, and that Mr. Hornby had been unable to recover the amount due by Muir. Instructions had been sent to Hongkong to sue John Hunt on these calls, but Hunt had written to say that be had absolutely no money to pay these | cally and he was compelled to ask for time. From the balance sheet made out by Mr. Hornby, it appeared that approximately the claims of creditors and costs of winding up the Company would amount to about $78.745; whilst the amount actually received by the Liquidator amounted to $56,513.87, including the estimated value of a safe.
