the following startling information, resulting, he says, fram an interview with a high personage whom he cannot name at present:

"According to this personage negotiations have been in p ogress for several months between the Emperor of Austria and the Vatican which may lead to a cession of the troublesome province of Trieste to the Holy Father as a place of residence. The offer has been actually made, and only an answer from the Vatican is awaited." At the Foreign Office and at the punclature I can learn nothing, but I bave reason to think that this startling statement is not without found. ation. Of course, however, the consent of the, Reicharath would have to be obtained to such Ha cession.

NEW YORK, March 31st. A peculiar and laughable case has just ended

in the United States court now in session in

Utica. Paul James Gregory was on trial, charged with using the United States mails for fraudulent purposes. He bad advertised a prescription that would win any one's love.

A lawyer in Pottsville, Pa., wrote for directions, and received in reply a letter in which was the following passage: "By following my instruc- tions you can gain a woman's love as readily in church or on the street as by a long courtship. If the person is your bitter enemy you can operate my treatment with as equal success as if she were your best friend, and win her undying love. Either sex can follow out with success my lessons."

Gregory had received thousands of letters from all over the country. A lady from Boston writes: "I have longed to be loved for twenty years, but as yet cannot find the secret. I would give anything if I could get a man to love me."

A Wyoming woman from New Orleans says: I am eighty years old and am passionately in love with George Francis Train. Tell me how I am to win him ?”.

From California comes a cry: "1want some one, I don't care who he is, to love. I am red haired and live on a California farm. Send the secret by telegraph, C. O. D."
