THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, APRIL 28, 1890.

FORMOSA.

(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT:)

Keelung, 17th April, 1890.. His Excellency the Governor has been ill after his exertions with the savages, but I am glad to say that he is now nearly recovered again.

Since my last letter to you, Mrs. Ashton's untimely death in Tamsui has cast a gloom over the whole community hero, and we all sympathise very much with poor Captain Ashton and the little motherless child.

Mr. Butler, the sub-Director of the Arsenal is Taipehfoc, is going home next week on' a well earned holiday to recover his health.

Mr. W. Andrew, of the 1.M. Customs service, is to be transferred to Shanghai, and we are very

which the speculative element is reduced to a minimum. We do not propose to enlarge upon the statements in the prospectus, but to confine ourselves to the more general features dealt with in the exhaustive report upon the property pro posed in be acquired, fem the pen of Mr. H. M. Becher, F. G. S., of S gpore. We may men- tion incidentally, however, that whereas the purchase price of the Penjim property has been fixed at 140,000, an Australian syndicate not long age paid 250,000, for a neighbouring area of the same size, but upon which less exploratory work had been done, and the syndicate have since re-sold the estate for 7500co? This will show what Australian miners of experience think of the future prospects of the Pahang goldfield,

The Penjam Company acquires a property of 100 square miles, with the sole 1ights of mining and planting upon it for 50 years, the only con ditions being that the company should be able. The railway is being pushed abead with full to show reasonable prospects of developing the force now. Both Mr. Watson and Mr. Bourne, property. The title of concession is held under the railway engineers, have been working over deed from the Sultan of Pahang, with the full here for some time and Mr. Watson is now recognition of the Government of the Straits going down "South," to place the work for the Suplements, and will be substanti:lly confumed funber exter sign in that direction. under seasonable conditions (including a great reduction of royalty) by the British Resident of the State. The Pioneer Company in 1888 commenced systematic exploratory workings to test he cormous outcrops of quartz exposed in old Chinese mining excavations, and the trial mill, of 11 heads of stamps, has since been successfully worked. The property has a commanding position on the fork of the two rivers, "Jelai" and Lepis" which theet on its eastern boundary to form the main branch of the Pahang River. It is about 180 miles distant by river from the capital town and port of Pekan, on the east coast of the State, which, during eight or nine months out of the year, is accessible in 21 hours by steamer from Singapore, the shallow draft steamer oward by the company completing the journey from Pekan to the mines in six days. Water com- munication is thus available for the transport. of machinery, stores, and other mining requisites into the district. By land it is connected with the

by a post-road, but the railway from Selangor is being rapidly extended towards Penjom, and will thus improve the facilities of transport. Water and timber are both.in abundant supply, and labour is plentiful and cheap. "An extensive slate formation is," says Mr. Becher," the predominant and characteristic gold-bearing country rock of Penjom as of the neighbouring districts, especially to the south-westward to Raub," and he goes on to point out that "gold is found throughout this formation chiefly in a wide central belt from north to south, but also in parallel belts further cast and west, the course of which may be traced by the remains of many recent and still more numerous ancient workings. Some deep pits on a former quartz outcrops are attributed to But prehistoric Siamese population. Later excavations consist of large open bill-cuttings on the softer rock and reef out-crops, and wide pits on patches of alluvial in the valleys. In the exploitation of these the Malay gold miners, who now only carry on small. desultory diggings, have been supplanted and outnumbered THE Steamship by parties of Chinese colonists. Though alluvial deposits of auriferous gravel are known in many valleys of this district, the company has not yet paid attention to them, beyond allowing the natives and a few parties of Chinese tributers to exploit them and after their own methods. In future it is expected that a large increase in this industry will be a good source of income to the company. Nalive methods may be improved by. the addition of water supply and use of welf made, tail-races, and in some places hydraulicing can probably be adopted with great advantage. In this direction the potentical capabilities of the property are but very slightly developed, there being large tracts of known auriferous character awailing examination and practical test."

SOCIETE FRANCAISE DES CHARBON-

HE GENERAL ANNUAL MEETING will take place at Hongkong on the 31st May, 1890, at the Registered Office in Victoria Buildings, at NOON 12 O'CLOCK.

Orders of the day:

Report presented by the Board of Directors. Report of the Commissioners. Approval of Accounts.

Bulk assays of the average quartz at Perjom, taken close to the surface, irrespective of the rich streaks, show large lode-masses containing from several penny weights to over an ounce of gold. the ton, and, as Mr. Becher observes, on the established precedent of such lodes improving in depth, it may be expected that in deeper mining a good average will be obtained. The company, in short, acquires a property which is really a going concern, with a large amount of explorashall have to deposit them tory work accomplished, and with every promise that future development will lead to splendid results. That the mine is rich in the precious metal appears to be beyond dispute, and with plenty of labour, timber, and water, the under- taking acts out under very happy auspices.

Pahang has been fór some time familiar to Brilish investors as containing within its borders very large deposits of tin, and it-has lately come into promminence as a gold-mining country. During the last year or two gengist einen engincers and have exploiting the country with a view to develop ment on a large scale. The Penjom Pabang Gold Company, as a pioneer in this direction, has already made some progress. The prospectus, which is issued to-day, states that shafts are sunk, engines erected, 12 head of stamps are at work, and an efficient staff has been collected. Shallow draught steamers are able to come up close to the mines by way of the great Pahang the Board will pass the necessary resolutions for River, and easy transportation is thereby secured. To the westward to Selangor good roads hare the forfeiture of the said Shares. been made, and the Selangor Railway Com- pany are pushing on their line as rapidly as possible. The gold is found principally in 'a slate formation, although alluvial deposits of auriferous gravel are known to exist. The gold throughout is said to be abundant, and lule or no mining difficulty exists in the way of its produe tion. This part of Pabang is well populated, the valleys are fertile, and local labour is therefore cheap and abundant; and, with the rapid and cheap communication which existe, and the sbun- dance of water, mining operations should be car ried out as cheaply as in almost any part of the world. It is even claimed that less than 5 dwt. will pay expenses, while so low a yield as os right through yield easily within compass-- would pay handsomely. The Peajom Pahang Company owns 20 square miles of territory, which has been acquired upon favourable terms, and altogether, the enterprise of the company seems to be deserving of the attention of inves. THE JELEBU. MINING AND TRADING tors in mines. It seems a somewhat curious fact that, surrounded as Pahang has been for so many by European colonies, the discovery

and practical, working of its immense mineral wealth has been left entirely to Chinese and Malays, who naturally were not anxious to Introduce the white men into their treasure house.

It is not a very favorable time just now for bringing out companies, but this venture would seem to deserve support. The com- pany takes over 20 square miles of territory, and some of the samples of the gold obtained from the property may be seen at Mesars. Mapple and Webb's and are of exceptionally pure quality.
