Mr. W. Chatham, of the Bristol Docks Engineers' Office, has been appointed Executive Engineer to the Colony of Hongkong.

On the other side, Messrs. Tokmakoff, Maist koff & Co.'s premises are protected by a fire wall, which saved them, although the shutters efthe upper storey bad to be taken off and sundry small coolic houses pulled down. In the early part of the outbreak one of the Ewo fire engines was at this spot, and under the direction of Mr. Grahami did good work in stopping the spread of the flames to foreign property, which, we believe, is insured in the Hongkong Fire Insurance Co. We regret to hear that this gentleman nart wly escaped a serious accident from the falling wood work, a big shutter falling down on him, but luckily only inflicting slight bruises. There is no doubt that the system of fire walls is the only safeguard against fire in the crowded native town, where the streets are so narrow that it would be impossible for any organised Fire brigade to work with a powerful engine. In the centre of the ruins are now standing some high fire walls that partly sur- rounded a Cantonese colony of tea boys, weigh.. boys are, but unfortunately the end of the square to windward had no wall, and cons:quently the property is destroyed, whereas it might have been saved. We are told that nearly the whole loss compradore being a heavy loser. A. London Company, we believe, is also interested to a small extent. The Customs boatmen, under Capt. Walker, were at Ewo with their ropes and hooks, and their services were invaluable. Nearly the whole of the foreign community we e also there, giving what aid they could with the fire engine &c. Some mandarins and soldiers arrived promptly and kept order, also preventing a great deal of footing. Quite late in the day the official Hook and Ladder Comp ny anived from the city accompanied by their flag bearers, unbrella bearers, lictors, band, and cavy and seemed disappointed that there was no work for them to do. When we left the scene of the fire at about midnight the rains were burning fiercely, and an enormous army of scavengers waiting with hungry eyes to pick out of the debris every scrap of old iron, nails &c. that could be found. Mr. Choufleur sent Stalwart with Elegant for a mile and a half, the griffin. ridden by Mr. Ruff and the old pony by Mr. Reynell. The time was good, 325, considering that the weight": could have been very little short, and shoes on, Elegant had the griffin all the way and showed great improvement on his previous form..

Shonly after, a Hack-staker of this gentle. man's did 3.27, and the owner was heard to lament that he had not entered him instead of some of his Derby candidates.

Eureka, Mr. Dallas up, went a mile and a ball in 3.25, last 114, and last quarter 31 seconds. He is now going in his old style, but comes home very stiff after his gallops. He is a grand old peay and one it is always safe to back, as one may be quite sure he will do his very best. Zephyr did exactly the same time, but did not seem to finish well, his last quarter being slow

he wants more work.
