I personally timed one gallop by this pony over the Derby course a shade outside 3.23, and have every reason to believe that he carried full weight. On this performance Wild Sage, who, will be steered either by Mr. Hutchings or Mr. Sampson, is "fairly in it,” and on a heavy course, if he will only do his best, is bound to give the favorites a lot of trouble.
Having thus hastily run over the prospects of the probable Derby competitors, I now Venture with considerable hesitation to anticipate the verdict by placing

The Count desires especially to direct the allen- tion of the Board of Trade to the unmanly con- duct of Frank. Mr. Humphreys headed the poll with five entries, and then came Mr. Buxey, Mr. John Peel, and Mr. Sid with four each, M. THERE is a marked reaction in Japan against the use of foreign dress, and now, according to the Kobumin-no-tomo, a reaction is setting in against foreign travel. There are three causes, it says, for this change. Firstly, so many Japanese have been abroad, that to have made the modern grand tour has lost its distinction. Secondly, the student has now as great facilities for prosecuting his studies in Japan, even in special branches, as abroad. Thirdly, ap many who have travelled bring back nothing with them "except ability to talk in a commonplace fashion about parks, museums, and so forth." Mr. Sid's griffins were a mystery from the first, and it may be a matter of doubt whether the racing public, or even the connections of the stable, are much wiser now as to the actual merits of Enticer, Entertainer, and Enchanter than they were six weeks ago. Encore has trained off and will not run at this meeting, so he may be at once dismissed from further consideration. Enticer is the best looking griffin in Mr. Sid's lot, and be is likewise the best mover. He has, however, done nothing out of the common during training, but that again may be owing to the fact that no real necessity has ever existed for sending him along at high pressure. One morning about a fortnight ngo Enticer covered a mile in 2.11, and yesterday on aticky course he traversed the Derby course in 3.26); these are his best semi-public performs ances. Enticer will be ridden in the Derby by Mr. Machado, and whatever beats bim will win. It is understood that Mr. Maclean will ride Entertainer in preference to Enchanter, although the latter, until within the past few days, has always been regarded as the Simon Pure of the stable:
Entertainer is a 'darkish

TO-MORROW'S EVENTS.
I take the opportunity of having a last word on the probable results of the other events set down for decision to-morrow. Since writing on this subject the other day nothing of importance has transpired to materially alter the views then expressed. In the Wong-nei-chong Stakes Mr Sid will start Chaser and Waldo, and will probably declare to win with the former. The dark-grey is a flyer for a short distance and if he manages to get well away he will win easily; should be fail, Walda ought to have little difficulty in beating Mr. Humphreys' selected.
Mt. Sid's colours should again be to the fare In the Ashley Cup on Sugewind, unless Home Guard is started, a contingency that is not expected. Golden Hope has apparently not gone the right way of late or he would have rendered a good account of himself, and although Silken Mead and Wild Mint are going well, and great things were expected of Grantham, I think neither of them last enough to beat the flying dun over this distance.
The Lusitano Cup will prove a 'most exciting tace should Home Guard and Orlando meet, in which event my preference is for the first named over this distance. Nothing else in the list of entries would appear to threaten danger to the two favorites for the Champions.
The Valley Stakes is still a most open race, Leander, Salute, Llygodan, Valentine, Bolero, Enterprise, and two or three others having fair prospects according their latest training gallops. Leander does not go so well as he did week ago, and if I place Salute, Llygodan and
wide of the mark. Valentine in the order named I may not be very
Volcano, Leap Year, Blue Ruin, Myth, and Arabic will likely contest the Foochow Cup, and my present impression is that the issue will be between the first named and Myth, as Leap Year seems to have partially lost his grand old form.
In the event of Matrialist not winning the D.rhy he should have a good look-in for the Canton Cup, in which his most dangerous opponents may prove to be Enticer and Dancraggan. The distance will suit the last named better than the Derby mile-and-a half.
The Farewell Cup should produce a grand struggle between Home Guard and Vigour, and as both are in first-rate order the form in the Shanghai St. Leger li likely coough to be con- firmed.
Valentine, if beaten in the Valley Stakes; will probably win the Compradors' Cup, if he can beat Enterprise.

The adjourned inquiry held by Mr. Wode house into the circumstances connected with the fire in Lyndhurst Terrace was resumed this afternoon. THOS. R. WALKER, Members.
JAMES BOWERS,
Captain Walker, his family and the survivors of the crew were fourteen weary months on this desert island and lived on sea birds and their eggs and what fish and turtle they could catch, suffering, as you may imagine, the greatest hard- ship and privation. And during this time there were people who did not hesitate to say; on the false testimony of some San Francisco loafer, I believe, that Walker had pirated the vessel and sold her in South America. In justice to Captain Walleer I wish to publicly state that before floating this little Company I made the fullest enquiry into his you remember Captain past history, Many Metcalf of the Oceanic. Well, he told me that he had served his apprenticeship under Captain Walker in a vessel belonging to his father, and that Walker was as good seaman as ever trod a ship's deck. Other well-known residents here who had had satisfactory business relations with him for their respective Companies in Yokohama also spoke lavourably of him to me. Captain Walker had a wife and three children with him, had lost all his money, and it was with a view to give him a start and add a new industry to this Colony that this little Company was flaxted by myself and friends. I say new industry, because it was new here, though it was old in Australia and New Zealand. Gentlemen, I have nothing more to say except to once more thank you for your attendance and for the confidence you have been kind enough to place in me and to ask that as soon as they have

GREEN ISLand cemenT COM-
PANY, LIMITED,
The following is the report [ssued to tha shareholders of this Company at the first ordinasy yearly meeting, to be held at the Hongkong Hotel on Friday, the 28th February, 1890, at 4 p.m.:-
1:
To the Shareholders of the Green Island Cement Company, Limited. Gentlemen,I have to report to you on the Company's operations for the first nine month up to the 31st December 1899.
The period in question has, to a great extent, been more or less confined to the completion of the workshops and machinery handed over by the former Company, the erectiod of additional machinery ordered out from home under the personal supervision of Mr. Ewens; the building of dwelling accommodation for the European and native staff, the necessary reclamation of
additional ground in front of and beyond the
works (about 100.000 square feet in aien), and
other minor but necessary incidental details.
It had been hoped that, by the end of the year, steady out-put of cement would have bera attained, but two unforeseen accidents have occasioned temporary delay; namely (1) the Labour atrikes in London, which caused a late arrival of certain necessary machinery, and (4) the unfortunate breaking down of the kiln-roof when cement-buining was started on 'a large scale some four to five weeks ago. The roof in time before the present manager, Mr. Rebbeck, question was bullt by the former Company some
had taken charge of the works, and before the skilled experience and technical knowledge of the present European staff had been procured. The roof is now in active course of reconstruc- tion under the constant supervision of men who have spent the greater part of their lives in cement works at home, and the employment of segmental fire bricks would seem to guarantee beyond a doubt the impossibility of another breakdown in this respect. The new roof is being mpidly completed and it is hoped that the works will be got into full swing fa two or three weeks and that the daily out-put will be not less than 25 tons of cement a day,
Later on, parts of the machinery will be first duplicated and then quadrupled from home, the final output of cement being estimated at something over 100 tons, or approximately 600 barrels per diem. The capital of the Company is amply sufficient to pay for this increase in machinery, but it has been, thought advisable to proceed with caution at first, and only to com- plete the plant when its efficacy bas been fully demonstrated.
A a matter of fact all the machinery has proved most satisfactory with the exception of the Burr Stone Mills, which have been supple. mented and will be ultimately replaced by Iron Mills; these latter have proved themselves well
The Company has the advantage of a com- adapted to the work required of them.. petent European staffs, which will shortly be further strengthened by the arrival of another skilled burner from home. The Directors have. much pleasure in testifying to the patience and perseverance, real, and energy with which tha European staff has met andovercome the many difficulties and obstacles which must necessarily beret an industrial enterprise started in a new country with unskilled labour and under bitherto
ucknown effects of climate.
These initiaryroubles have slowly but surely been surmounted and it is believed that the
shareholders may look forward in confidence to a bright and prosperous future. The small out turn of cement already roade before the accident to the kiln, has been freely taken at full market prices, and buycts have pronounced themselves. as well satisfied with results. The prices ob
space the papers here which have printed erroneous statements respecting the Wandering Minstrel and Capt. Walker will give equal or greater publicity to the truth. I should not have said so much were it not that people frequently remember the bad and not the good. Captain Walker came here with a good character, and he has been fully acquitted before a properly constituted Court, and ibat is sufficient evidence that his conduct has been. straight-forward and honorable, and that it is not owing to him that the expedition failed.
Mr. de Champeaux then moved the adoption tained leave an ample margin of profit, and this of the report, in the course of which the liquida-margin will be still larger when the out-put in tor (Mr. Humphreys) said :-I beg to hand you a statement of accounts of the Company in liquidation, showing a net: balance of Capital, after paying all liabilities, of $15.589.71, which amount will admit of my returning to you a percentage of 5196 of your Capital, or nearly 52 centa to the dollar.
