C. EVEN General Manger, Aave compared the above statement with the Books and Youchers of the Company and certify the same to be correct

Hongkong, roth Februar, 1890.

T. HENDERSON, Auditor. a

THE CHINA-BORNEO COMPANY, LIMITED.

The following is the first report of the Board. of Directors to the ordinary meeting of.share. holders, to be held at the Hongkong Hotel, at 1230 pm on Thursday, 6th March, 1890:-

Gentlemen,Your Directors have now to lay before you the Accounts for the year, 1st July, 1888, to 30th June, 1889. which show a net profit. new account. of $4.977.24 carried forward to Owing to various causes'incidental to the estab lishment of a hew Company working at a dis- tance, and with irregular communication hitherto. the presentment of the Accounts has been much delayed, but your Directors, whilst regretting this, trust that in future such will not recur.

TIMBER BUSINESS.

During the twelve months the shipments of wood from Sandakan were 142,000 cubic feet, but during the six months from July to December timber to an equal quantity has been received, and your Directors hope for an increase in the sales during the present year at paying rates.

SAW MILLS.

The working of the Hongkong Mills shows a loss, accounted for by want of orders during the first six months, but there has since been good employment for the Mill, which is making head. way against the prejudice of the Chinese con- tractoss, and orders are now coming in which should keep the Mill going without any stoppage, and produce profitable returns,

LOCAL TRADE AND AGENCIES. Yor Directors have deemed it advisable to meet the development of the Coasting trade, and in addition to the steamer Normanhurst, have recently purchased the steamer Phu Quoc on favourable terms; she is now in the bands of the Dock Company, and is being fitted out to suit the requirements of the trade, and should prove an increasing source of revenue to the Company. As the country opens out, the Agencies of the Company in Sandakan should increase in number and value, thus producing

a fair r. venue.

SANDAKAN SAW MILLS.

Your Directors understand from Mr. Abraham- son that these Mills are of very first class d.scription, substantial and well-built; they should have been completed last June, but were not in full working order until December; it is expected that they will do good and profitable work, both for local trade and export.

TOBACCO LAND,

A very valuable asset of the Company, in the opinion of your Directors, is the 20,000 acres, at present of course unproductive, purchased at $2 per acre, when this Company was formed; as the price of tobacco land has been raised by the Government to $6 an acre, and has been sold in Europe at a considerably higher figure, there is reason for looking on this concession as likely to realise a considerable sum of money at no distant date.

"

TIMBER CONCESSIONS. 10,000 acres, under cutting leases, wire granted to the Company, the greater ponion of which have been selected; a large quantity of timber bas been cut on these lands but there is little sign of diminution of supply; these will form a valuable source of income to the Company.

DIKECTORE.

Mr. Solomon having left the Colony Mr. D. R. Sassoon has consented to take the vacant seat, and his appointment now requires to be con- Armed. In accordance with the Articles of Association Messrs. Dalrymple and Stokes retire. but being eligible offer themselves for re-election. AUDITORS.

The Accounts have been audited by Messrs. Fullarton Henderson and R. Lyall, and their re-election as Auditors of the Company is recom- mended.

A WHOLE TOWN IN ASHES. OVER 200 HOUSES B1 RNED TO THE GROUND.

One of the most divatus fires that has been recorded for many years in Japan took place o Saturday night, the gh fast, within about a mile or a mile and a half of Yokohama. What waS D couple of days ago the thriving agricultural town of Hodogaya, a well as part of Kanagawa, is now in ashes and only a few gndowns with blackened, and in some cases charted, walls remain where previously stood over 200houses, Sofuras wecan 1arn it was about half past six in the evening

were mos

when a shed at Katabira Yamashita, Hodogaya, in which burned ashes were stored, belonging to a man named Shibuya, a farmer, and numbered 1342, was found to be in flames. A strong wind was blowing at the time with almost typhoon force, and in a remarkably short space of time that and adjoining buildings were burning furiously, Carried by the wind the fumés spread from house to house and soon the town was one inass of fire which it up the sky for miles around. Unfortunately the wind was blowing, to where the hiuses thickly collected, in the directi n of Kanag wa, and with such force that it was impossible to check the progress of the flames. Those who had time to do so saved their household goods, and along the roadside and in the fields were to be seen, in some cases huddled around the few things which they had saved, families who had to fly from their homes, Thousanda o' people from Yokohama and surrounding districts flocked to the scene to witness the conflagration, and the road leading from the direction of the railways, towards Podogaya became blocked du ing part of the evening. Til about 11 o'clock, the flames continued to spread almost unchecked, and it was not till part of Shibo, Kanagawa, was consumed that they were brought to a s'op. Rain was falling by this time and the wind abating. The houses, however, con. tinued to blaze for several hours longer. Some of the godowns appeared to have stood the fire pretty well and put of the produce stored in them was undamaged. Most of them, however, appeared to have been swept through by the flames and their conten's completely burned or spalled, The houses had in nearly every Instance been burned completely to ashes. We are informed that 3r occupied and four unoc cupied houses in Hodegava, and 179 in Kana gawa were destroyed, The Asama ihrine and schoolhouse were also burned down. One person is said to have been burned to death and iwo injured-Japan Gosette.

The old man went upyairs to lesk, but found no one, for the thief, had hidden hin self in the rafters of the rouf The watchman then proceeded to treat himself to a solitary pipe, and by some mischance set fire to the house. The house burned while the watch- my slept on; and the thief came again to finish his work, but was 'alarmed seeing the flames making the best of his & when he was caught by the villagers. U fortunately for him, the fire spread until seventeen huts were burned down. The lynch law practised in Chinese villages is very severe upon incendiaries, and in the minds of the villagers there seemed no doubt that in Lat'ow they had caught one red-handed. His appeals for justice or mercy met with no response; they tied him hand and foot with straw roper, Pured lamp-oil on the poor wretch and hurled him into the burning mass, where death after some minutes put an end to his terrible sbricks.

SCOTT's Emulsion of Pure Cod Liver Oil with Hypophosphites, for Rickets, Marasmus and all wasting disorders of children, is very remarkable in its results. The rapidity with which children gain flesh and strength upon it is very wonderful, '{ Read the following -"I have tried Scout's Emulsion' in cases of wasting in young children, and I am of opinion that it is a valuable prepar tion for such cases. The children take it and ask for more, and the good effects are apparent. I consider it far superior to ordinary Cod Liver OIL-J.MARSHALL, M.R.C.5., &c., 143, Grange Road, Bermondsey, S.E.
