Later reports received of the fight between Slavin and Smith are rather conflicting, but appears that after fourteen rounds the fight was declared to be drawn in consequence of the... unfnimeas shown by Smith and his partisans towards Slavin.
Later particulars show that it took place at Bruges, in Belgium, at eight o'clock on Sunday morning. After fourteen rounds had been fought, a dispute occurred between Slavin's and Smith's seconds, and the fight was declared to be drawn in consequence of the disgraceful con- duct of the party supporting Smith. The referee, however, refused to stop the fight, which thereupon continued, and it is reported that Slavin was killed.
Still later reports state that the fight lasted twenty-two minutes, during which time Smith was repeatedly knocked down, and eventually left he ring. Slavin remained and claimed the fight. The referee declared it a draw, and was thereupon mobbed. Slavip was also set upon, beaten with sticks and other weapons, and severely maltreated, but he is now recovering.. The rumour that he was killed is not correct.
It is stated that a well-known sportsman directed the roughs who supported Smith to be present. Slavin forced Smith, but while he was. in the latter's corner the roughs maltreated him, and this occured several rounds before the last. It was known in London before the fight that it was intended to maltreat Slavin. He is com paratively uninjured, though he was strucic with
