THE LATE DR. STEWART,

A meeting of the friends of the Lite Colonial Secretary, Dr. F. The Chairman said that it was needless for him exnaiste on the many high-qualities of Dr. Stewart-nearly all present could lestify to his uniring zeal in the aff irs of the Colany, and his u bane manners i forwarding the inter eats of everyone who applied to him. His private character was equally high-generous and friendly to all, everyone was his friend, The subscriptions had been limited to $3, over and about $uoco had been given up to now, Sug Restions had been made that a tablet should be erected, and a' scholarship handed, in thought that the tablet should be placed in the the Alice Memorial Hoarital. It had also ben Victoria College, or an illuminated window erected in the Cathedral.

Dr. Chalmers thought that a scholarship in the Medical College would be more suitable.

Mr. Legge thought that a bust should be obtained from home, and be placed in Victoria College, as there was not enough subscribed to found a scholarship.

The Hon. J. J. Keswick thought the proceed ings premature, as all the subscriptions had not- come in. He proposed that a sub-committee be appointed, to collect subscriptions, ascertain what the various memorials suggested would cost, and report to a fipture meeting.

Capt Deare, who seconded, mentioned the names of Mr. Ryrie, Dr. Chalmers, Mr. Wode. house, Mr. Forbes, and Mr. Noble,

The motion was agreed to, and the meeting adjourned.

A PECULIAR SHIP'

|

Now the fact of the matter is, there is really no danger at all, and if shipowners only knew the advantages derived from carrying it on deck, no steamer would go to set without it. Take, for instance, nne f our Ho how pig and kerosene traders, which have only a limited amount of mom on the upper deck, and who find that, even when it is sucked around the funnel and hoiler casing, and on the top of the deck and winch steam pipes, there is barely room for tore than 1700 or 1800 cases, in a more or less leaky condition. The damaged or leaky cages are no detriment whatever, and cannot be avoided, because they are generally slung in board hurriedly in the small hours, of. the morning, white the vessel. is lying to off Green Island, when the gentleman with the eagle eye is supposed to be asleep. We will say for instance that the leakage only Anjousts to 2 or 3 per cent, which instead of beg a disadvantage, is a positive benefit. For in the first place the nil runs on the deck and gives it a nice glossy appearance, and bring of a penetrating nature it finds its way through the seams and drops on the passengers who are herthed on the top cargó in the егд deck, and as everybody knows ker sene is a splendid remedy for rheumatism, these passengers who may be suffering from Theumatics are completely cured during the passage, free a expense. Again, the surplus oil and, and helps to better the condition of the which does not le kthrough, runs over the ship's

paint-work, making the sides and bottom nice and slippery, so that the steamer goes through the water ch quick, thereby saving time and coal, and in case of heavy weather if hel-s to smooth the set, s'everybody knows the old

saying about oil on tronhird waters.

There are also several other advantages. We will say that the tween decks are nearly full, with the exceptinn of a couple or three feet, reserved for the passengers to crawl along and lay down and sleep. The heavy weight on the top deck makes the vessel nice and crank, so that she first lays over an one side for a few minutes, and then gradualy goes over to the other, which is far better than the quick rolling of a ship withour deck cargo, and there is not so much danger of sea sickness among the

passengers.

Then when the oil is stacked on the deck steam pipes, the leakage thoroughly cleans the pipes and wes labour, besides being a great advantage to the poor deck passenger who lights his little fire in his primitive fire pot, in older to warm his "chow," because the fire burns all the better for being under the lee of kerosene cases, and t-e loose oil floating about can always be used for keeping the fire going, There are other advantages which if patented would make a man's fortune, but enough has heen said to convince even the most sceptical that kerosene oil is not dangerous. In fact it will not blaze except it catches fire, and it won't explode except through sheer cussedness. So trusting these few lines will help to clear the vision of certain people, and generally benefit humankind,
