intense darkness. Moreover, as I was fully aware of the nervousness of the natives with firearms, I demurred for some time before consenting to do what the poor mother wanted. However, at last determined to attempt the rescue of the body. It was my first adventure of the kind, and as I had to head the beaters, well, I will say I hardly liked the job, and was morcover afraid of betraying my own nervousness before the natives. Ilowever, to cut the matter short, I quickly collected about 50 volunteers, armed a dozen with short rifles, and the remainder with spears, bill-books, and the usual tom-toms, torches, &c.,. I myself carrying a heavy double barrelled 12-gauge fowling piece, each barrel loaded with two hardened spherical bullets fum. bled together, with five diams of Hall's best behind them.

Off we started for the hamlet wherein the vic. tim had lately resided; it was a lonely place, three miserable huts, a treacherous bog on one side and the jungle down to within 50 yards on the three others. We quickly took up

the

spoor, for our enemy had shouldered his victirn; we reached the skirts of the jungle, and then the row began, Hardly had we got inside the jungle when one of the beaters shouted "here's the corpse." Arush was at once made to his side, torches shone out, and there, lying across the trunk of a fallen tree. was the naked body of the victim. Her breast and neck clawed and torn, a huge piece bitten out of the left thigh, and her hair, six feet long, licked off. These were the girl-eater's doings! He And of course stark off. The awful sight wän more than I could bear, so hastily giving an order or two, I returned to the huis.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1889.

Prefect's proclamation granting a general amnesty to the fekin obstjucianets, hive ali returned to their various trades and a ocations: There has been, however a number of ruffians who, taking advantage of the disturbances, have prosecuted a system of robbery and black mailing to the terror of the law-abiding popula tion, and this proclamation is not altogether to their taste. These worthies are still continuing their career of raping, notwithstanding the pro- clamation. Sin, prefect of Kwang-chow fu, bat therefore sent a force of armed police to Shek mun to arrest these robbers, ant bring them to Canton to be tried for their offesices,

The Karun has the following:-Owing to wolycs abounding in the two districts of Feng- chou and Fu-ning, In the province of Shantung and their boldness in scouring round in numerous herds, the people of these districts dare no: travel from one place to the other, unless in com- panies of a dozen or twenty men, armed with guns to repel the attacks of the e, voracious animals. A few days ago a party of five men, armed with guns, were attacked by a drove of wolves, which devoured the whole puty, The authorities have given orders to some troops at Fu-ning to organize a general hunt and "war to the knife" has been declared against the wolves. The districts of Feng-chou and Fo-ning are some eighty miles to the north of Chefoo and near the districts ravaged by the Yellow River foods.

Well, I remained in those quarters for about a fortnight, and did my best to kill the brute some-resterday at the same time from Canton, and how or other, but as I had no strychnine with me, I failed. However, he got frightened and removed to other scenes. It was many a year ago, but your paper has refreshed my memory as if it were yesterday.

Since then I have waged a terrible war on all of the genus.cat. I don't want to brag, but I think I can say that I have myself trapped, poisoned, or shot a hundred tigers, and caused five hundred more to be so treated. Not later than a week ago a man-eater growled at me without any known reason. had the trap made, paid for it, and caught him five days afterwards. His skin was taken off his back this morning.

Two ferry boats running, hetween Canton and some country villages along the banks of the Pearl River happened to start the day before going the same direction naturally raced each other. The excitement communicating from the boatmen to the passengers, these occupying the slower boat commenced to challenge the winners Wock to a free fight when they got on shore. The reply received to this challenge was a volley into the challenging boat of a lot of bowls and dishes that had just been used for the non day meal. A general fusilade accordingly began, and when the supply of this strange Ammunition was exhaudel, both bans con- tained an appalling number of broken heads and disfigured faces cut by the rough kind of crockery in general use in Chinese passenger boats. It is doubtful whether this fray may not lead to some clan fights.

The Tin Was, a Chinese newspaper published

in this colony, contains "the following:-The Autumn. "Criminal Sessions for the province of Kuanglung commenced at Canton at noon of the 16th instant before Wang, Commissioner of Justice, when number

But to the purport of this letter-man-eating tigers. Indeed, tigers are very easily poisoned one grain of strychnine will do for the biggest. Two causes generally occur; the victira is a horse, a bullock, a huffalo, or a pig, or in some cases the victim is a human being. In both cases the robber must be followed with squibs and tom- toms or with any other row-begetting means. It is hardly worth while stalking the brute by still of cases were dealt with. Then if the bait is a four-in which the culprits were caught red-handed at footed animal, a piece about to lb. weight, say half a shoulder, should be cut off and poisoned by pricking the flesh with about jo holes into which the smallest possible quantity of strychnine is dropped with the point of a pea knife. A grain is sufficient if neatly arranged; the bait so prepared must be fastened to a stump or peg, with a rope about the size of a man's finger and a foot lang (free of stump), and laid on the ground exactly where the carcass of the animal killed was found; the said carcass must then be carted away, Or

For the district. of Namhoi, there were three pirates tried and two gentlemen of the same persuasion, caught in Punyo, were also haled hefore the representa- live of offended justice. In all there was a total of five cases of murder, two for maps, and seven for murder and piracy combined. It is scarcely | necessary to add that the sentence in each case was the customary one of decapitation,

The best traps are the pit and gallows trap and the spring spear trap. Nothing comes up to strychnine, the only draw back is that you can't trust a native with it or a Chinaman.
