IN the House of Commons on the 21st ulto. Sir James Fergusson informed Six J. Swinburne that it was a fact, as shown by an examination which took place in the year 1815, that a balance of the accounts between Britain and Fortugal, was due by Portugal of £3.489,240, on account of arms, ammunition, and other supplies, fur- nished during the Peninsular War. This balance had not been repaid to England, nor bad Por- tugal paid any interest upon it. The latter vessel was to commence running at

To meet further requirements the Board have decided to build another new consting steamer, the London and Glasgow Ship-building Company, the contract for which has just been made with and she is to be completed in December next.

Notwithstanding the continued competition which the Company has had to encounter on the chief lines of communication, the Board are much gratified that they are able to congratulate the shareholders on a year of

48,903 in 1887, and £53.870 in 1886, although exceptional prosperity. The net earnings of the steamers in 1888 have reached £71.307, against the average number of steamers employed was about the same in all three years. This satis factory result 'enables the Board, after making full allowances for depreciation, to recommend a dividend of 6 per cent for the year, carrying forward a balance of £1,606 14%, gd, to the next account. If this should be approved by the meeting, the dividend warrants will be issued, on the 13th June.

The Directors have now decided to transfer

in former balance-shecis as #Parchase of Business," to the cost of the feet, so that the amount may be steadily diminished in 'future, pari pastu with the valuations of the vessels. For the past-year they consequénily write off from these two items £13,456, against £25.363. in 1887, and £24.281 in 1886. In reference to the demand for freight during the past year, the General Agents remark :-

"Though the closing months of the year were dull, the rates of freight were never unduly depressed, as was the case during 1887, and on the whole, the results of the working on all the Company's Lines may be regarded as very satisfactory. The usual demand for tonnage to load at Newchwang for the Southern ports, which generally sets in during the months of October and Novem= ber, did not arise this year, owing partly to the heavy floods in the Newchwang district, which prevented produce coming down to the part in any quantity, and partly to the very high prices demanded by the growers, which greatly restricted operations. The trade from Shanghai to the Southern ports bas been moderately good. Occasionally cargo has been sufficiently plentiful to keep all, the regular liners well employed, and during November and December an unpre cedented rush of cotton to Kobe and Yoko- bama gave some of the larger vessels good employment."

Company has been maintained with regularity and efficiency. On the Calcutta Line there is The service on all the lines occupied by the
