standard of intellectuality in China is -undoubtedly very low. Chinese classicism is so antique that it can hardly bear com- parison with modern ideas. To modern sciences and arts China is still a stranger; a lad fresh from any European "or American school knows more about
history, geography, physiology and the natural sciences than the most accomplished scholar of the famous Ham-lin Academy at Peking can pretend to know. Asregards the moral sciences, although Confucianism and Buddhism are replete with moral Injunctions, it is an undeniable fact that the moral tone of the Chinese masses is anything but high. Morality being the result of intellectual refinement rather than of authoritative injunctions or of special forms of religious belief, it stands to reason that once China' becomes thoroughly enlightened by a superior standard of education, native morality will proportionately increase and advance towards a higher degree ofperfec. tion. HONGKONG, TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 1889.
THE ideas expressed the other day by the writer in the Kwang-Poo with reference to the advisability of China opening all its ports to foreign trade, are a faint indication of the thoughts entertained by the liberal minded Chinese on this all-important subject. While China still remains a practically sealed country to European enterprise and industry, it is refreshing to see a native who, like the generality of his countrymen, has been imbued with strong doses of conservatism, step forward and propound quite a contrary doctrine. The enlightened classes are evidently coming to the conclusion that Conservatism is the bane of China, and that the only policy that will bring about the country's advancement and general welfare is a practically unrestricted free trade with all other nations. As liberal ideas, however, aroplants ofvery-alow growth in the Middle Kingdom, it may be years, perhaps a century may yet roll by, before the AN Emergency meeting of Victoria Lodge, No. 1016, will be held in Freemasons' Hall, Zetland doctrine of free trade and reciprocity takes Street, this evening, at 8.30 forgo'clock precisely, firm root in vast Cathay.
