out to keep order and prevent a possible disturbance. On the 19th the Japanese work men abruptly ceased to work and took away the machinery; and it was found that they considered the case hopeless, as although the first day they reached a depth of 20 feet, on the second they only got two feet lower down, and reported the ground as hard as iron; while the walls of the hole already made kept continually caving in, it is said the Japanese engineer refused all remuneration on account of the failure of his attempt. Are Japanese methods useless
with Chinese soil?
Ta-li is the most important of the villages in the jurisdiction of the "Nam-bol" Hien, Canton: who did good services in defending the city of The people there are a rough and sturdy race, Canton at the time of the Taiping rebellion. These people have a curious China New Year custom which reiterated official proclamations have failed to check, and which none but a rude and illiterate race would care to indulge in; it is called to sha, "throwing sand." On the first and second days of China New Year the cotton dyers, agriculturists, and lads of the village under twenty years of age, turn out and range themselves in two factions, facing ench other in battle array at a distance of some tens of yards, armed with slings and stones. A fierce battle of slinging stones, then commences, which goes on until one side is beaten and retreats, sometimes leaving men lying on the field with broken heads or limbs," These are canied to an adjacent joss-house, and their wounds treated with the ashes of incense-sticks burnt before the idol, which are believed to have a wonderful healing power on these occasions, The combatants meet again as good friends after the fight, and no l-feeling is caused by the observance of the old custom, which is supposed to bring goed karvests to the kelds where it is celebrated, and missiles are never wanting, for heaps of them are produced, it is said, by super- natural agency. This year they did not have, enough of it at China New Year owing to the rain and mud in the fields, and had stranged, says our correspondent, for an "intercalary slinging match "when the rain cleared off.
PEKING NOTES.
This year, in particular, large quantities of sturgeon (Russ: ossetrina) have come to market in a frozen state, and it is said some fish may have weighed 15olbs. or sealba, The Mongols bring some probably from Klachta, but some come from the Manchurian rivers, which abound. with salmon, trout, grayling, and other fine fish of the kinds that love cold and 'clear running waters. Some really excellent fish, handsome in form and of large size, with firm pink flesh, come from the lakes near Paoting Fu, also some well flavoured perch.
Some very fine steriet have come to our game market, but whether from the Baikal Lake, or Amur, or the Manchurian rivers, cannot yet be accurately ascertained. The fish, which comes. in a frozen state, has always been in prime con- dition, and delicious, justifying the Russian boast that the sterlet, of the Volga especially, is the fish of the world. The size of our specimen is very remarkable, weighing as they do from 20 to 30 pounds. The prices paid in our market varied from 2 to 3 dollars, but in St. Petersburg or Moscow, a fish of the size we see here would cost 50 or 60 dollars, even more, as the price increases rapidly according to size, Hitherto foreigners or their cooks, have not bought the sterlet, which has been for years past exclusively enjoyed by the Manchus, who much frequent the game and frozen food market.
These Peking markets for winter game have always existed, but were never before so well and largely supplied as at present. It is probable that some of the best game, such as pheasants, partridges, etc., come from the Imperial Hunting Park, which is only ten or twelve miles distant.
The thirtieth birthday of the Emperor William, was celebrated at the Legation of Imperial Ger many on Sunday, 27th January, Herr von Brandt, the Minister to China, gave a diplomatic dinner on the occasion, followed by a ball. The guests numbered nearly 100, the rooms were beautifully decorated, and the verandah, which was bung with precious embroideries, silk, carpets, and large portières of satin on one side, and on the other by a large collection of trees and shrubs, all artistically arranged, excited general admiration. A superb supper was served at about midnight, and the table bore many rare delicacies. There was a large sturgeon, weighing erhaps solbs., from Siberia; a large and hand. some fish, nearly as heavy, from Paoting, and very fine game such as coc de bruyèra, rare pheasants, Mongol chicken, black cock, antelope, wild boar, etc. Not even Shanghai at this season could show a finer or larger variety of the best
game.

Doctor Chapman is a St. Bartholomew's man, and before coming to Borneo held no important appointment at the largest Hospital the Government tried to borrow from a foreign in Liverpool.
All the Managers of the Tobacco Estates infirm but was refused. It must be a pretty rotten government that is not good, for such a paltry Marudu Bay are busy with their field work for the coming season. Chinese coolies arrive by Soul, as certain grave charges have been made sum. There is a very great scandal going on in every steamer, and buckets, diays, nad other transhipped into the tongkangs by busy gangs of a law suit, I am not at liberty to say any more implements for the estates are discharged and against some of our most respected residents. As the matter will most likely form the subject of men.

All the saloon cabins were let to Chinese, and the Europeans had to travel as deck passen. gers with all the attendant discomforts arising therefrom, The Patnam is doing such a good cargo trade that it seems a pity that through an error of judgment on the part of the owners she should thus lose all her old prestige as a passen- ger boat.
Towards the end of the month the North East monsoon has been stronger, and heavy rain has fallen, but on the whole there has been a very small record for what we are supposed to consider the "wet season."

CHEFOO.
UNSETTLED STATE OF THE SHANTUNG PROVINCE.
(FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.)
Chefos, 21st February, 1889, Mr. W. A. Wills, of the English Baptist Mis sion, who recently lost his wife, arrived here yes- terday from the interior, and brought with kim his three children whom he is sending home to England; and I am indeed sorry to relate that during the long journey he was cruelly robbed by the Chinese, of all his late wife's jewellery and personal effects-things which were endeared to him by the remembrance of a cherished. and faithful companion, who has peacefully set out on a pilgrimage to that far away land whence she will not return, and left him to pursue his solitary way among. strangers and heathens. The following is an accurate, account of the robbery, which he has been kind enough to supply me with:-"1 am thankful to say that the robbery was unattended by any of the excitements of a personal attack. It took place at a town to li East of Lai-chi-fu, called Shih-li-p'u, last Friday, the 15th, about midnight. While I was sleeping in the ion some men untied from the cart, and carried off a large wooden pack case, which contained all Mrs. Wills' clothes, also a number of articles I was sending to England, as souvenirs, for relations and friends. About 4 o'clock the next day the box was found in a field not far from the inn; it was broken open and 'all (except a few of the little articles used as wrappers) were taken. The people of the town believe I was followed by a gang of thieves from the city of Lai chi fu, and that a personal attack had been planned. The next night a number of the elders of the town, with their sons, stayed at the inn all night as a body, guard, evidently expecting a more serious affair. But I am glad to say all was peaceful, with the exception of the Jal men, demanding 20,000 cash for their trouble, which was at last settled by the inn. keeper giving 3,000 and myself 5,009,2
