ANTONIO CARNEIRO, a young man lately employed as clerk with a firm of merchants in Haiphong, appeared this afternoon at the Police Court, charged on remand with stealing or embezzling $1,000 from his employers in Haiphong. MCCONNACHY, of the British bark -Hailie E-Taplay,-which-arrived-from-Borneo- in January last, has kindly placed at our disposal, for public inspection, a wonderful specimen of asnake, which was captured on board his vessel on the night of the 7th lust. The following are the particulars of the capture as supplied to us by Capt. As only one death from small-pox is reported for the week ended March 31st-a Chinese who died at the Tung Wa Hospital, we may safely conclude that this loathesome epidemic has been completely stamped out in the colony. The general arrangements left something to be desired, the old proverb of " too many cooks," etc., applying with considerable force, Mr. W. 11. Young proved an excellent staiter, Captain "Deane and Mr. R. K. Leigh were the judges, and Major Tripp worked hard as Clerk of the Course. A good deal of credit for the success of the mecting is due to Mr. Chas. H. Thompson, the honorary secretary, who was indefatigable in his
exertions.

The annual meeting in connection with our focal-athletic-Institutions was held on the Cricket Ground last Saturday afternoon. Nat withstanding the unfavorable character of the weather, rain threatening the whole afternoon and falling at intervals, there was a large attendance of spectators, the Grand Stand being well filled with ladies. Amongst others on the ground were His Excellency Governor des Voux, Vice Admiral Sir Nowell Salmon, Major-General Cameron, and a large number of naval and military officers and leading residents. The Band of the 58th Regiment was in attend ance under Mr. J. Moran's tendership, and added considerably to the afternoon's enjoyment.
