Excellency at the disposal of the Mauritians and. other British subjects desirous of leaving Mada- gascar, and who had not been able to do so from want of money and for other reasons, to be made publicly known by the Mayor Tamatave. Tamatave, July 8, 1883.-M. le Governeur, -I have received the letter your Excellency did me the honour of writing to me on the subject of the Rev. George Andrew Shaw, at Tamatave, against whom a grave accusation is brought. I must not leave you in ignorance of the fact that I have had to impose silence on the arrogant pretensions of Commander Johnstone, of Her Britannic Majesty's ship Dryad, to interfere (i tervenir) in this matter. But to the courteous questions dictated to your Excellency by your interest in Mrs. Shaw, whose fate is certainly deserving of pity, I am glad to be able to reply with some confidential particulars, which I can reveal without interfering with (troubler) the course of justice. On the occupation of Tu- matave by the French, Mr. Shaw inhabited as tenent a house which was proposed by the owner, Mr Aitken, to receive picket of soldiers. When they came to take up their, -quarters they found in the garden bottles of wine, evidently act out (disposis) to tempt them. Those who tasted suddenly fell into a state of lethargic intoxication. The offices in command at once broke the bottles and poured out the liquid, keeping a bottle as a specimen, which is at present at Réunion, undergoing chemical analysis and the return of which I am awaiting. The tenant and the ownerware at once arrested.

"CLUB FOR CAPTAINS,"
in order to supply a want, which, he says, exists for such an institution, to provide Captains of vessels visiting this harbour with accommodation for obtaining 'MEALS AND OTHER KEFRESHMENTS AT ALL HOURS.
This circular states that the Captains of vessels coming to Hongkong are badly catered for by the few so-called Hotels, and in so doing grossly libels the Hotel and Innkeepers of the Colony.
Mr. HAHN intends to provide a place where Meals can be had at all hours, and where Captains can meet and discuss any matters of importance in connection with seafaring interests. Each Room will be Elegantly and Comfortably FURNISHED, and a BILLIARD TABLE and a PIANO will be provided in each room. There will also be 'MUSICAL EVENINGS and DANCING during the winter.
On behalf of the HOTEL and INNKEEPERS
of Hongkong I protest against Mr. HAHN, whe darries on Business as a Piano tuner and repairer or any other person, being permitted to infringe on our rights by establishing what is simply AN UNLICENSED PUBLIC HOUSE..
