The successof Mr. Arthur's griffing was another noteworthy feature of the Spring Meeting. To win the Grifins and Chau-Shang-Kluk Cup with Cheapside, the Concordia Cup with Piccadilly, the Manchu Stakes with Belgravis, besides finishing second to Gracchus in the Teatles Cup with Pall Mall, was a bit of luck which seldom falls to the lot of any owner. Mr. Faul was singularly unfortunate with his high class team. The veteran Tajmahal, although under sus picion, won the Race Club Cup easily, but Mon- tezuma, Sunlight, Shamrock and Castigator all failed to earn winning brackets. The chesnut was, prior to the meeting, reported to be in his best form, so it is possible that the heavy going did not suit his lengthy stride. The other three are just one remove from first class, and no doubt were beaten on their merits. Mr. Fun- Bus popular yellow and black colors were well to the front in the Kiang-su Plate and Shanghai Sukes by the aid of the game old Prejudices and the swell griffin Pebble scored a clever win in the Racing Stakes from his stable companion Peppo and a good field. On Saturday morning last a native named Ah Ching, who has recently been employed as a plasterer on the Tai Ping premises, which have been undergoing alterations, committed deliber ate suicide by throwing himself into the river. There was a strong freshet flowing at the time, and the body of the unfortunate man, was swiftly carried away by the current, and has not been recovered. The deceased, who was married, and possessed of a family, has also left aged parents, who he chiefly supported-to lament his loss.

The chief topic of conversation amongst the Chinese at the present time, is regarding a case of exhumation of a co:pse interred some 320 years ago, in land recently purchased by a foreigner, and now undergoing excavation. Rumour has it, that the body was in such a perfect state of preservation that the bones were not putrefied or the hair of the queue perished. A public auction of mce ponies held by Messrs. Sowice and Symons shortly after the races, offers food for reflection. Some 58 lots were exposed for sale, but less than a score of them changed hands. I read that there was a small attendance of foreigners, but the com- petition was by no means keen; so that prices ruled below the average. They certainly ruled exceedingly low when Hualachan, third for the Hongkong Derby of 1882, and second, beaten a short nose according to the judge, to Driving Cloud in the fastestrun race for the Keechong Cup ever seen in this colony, changed hands for 18 taels. We learn, on the best authority, that it is the fatention of the Chinese to commence, very shortly, the construction of a land telegraph line between this port and Amoy; and that the Chi- nese Authorities in Foochow are at present busily engaged in making all preparatory arrangements for the construction of the same, which will prob ably be erected as suggested in 1874, when the Great Northen Telegraph Company undertook to build the line for the Chinese, but were "com- pelled to abandon the idea owing to the numerous Fengshultes. The latter will now be conspicuous by their absence; and the building, onde com menced, should only take a few months to com- piete. We are in a position to state, that the Chi nese will work under foreign supervision, and that they have already engaged several foreigners with a view to the erection and working of the contemplated lines.
