CLEARANCES AT THE HARBOUR OFFICE,

Noon. Not a single transaction in shares has been reported this morning, nor are there any movements of particular importance to chronicle. China Sugars are rather weaker than was the case yesterday, sellers now ruling the market at 185, and probably a slightly lower offer might be accepted in several quarters. Luzons are again creating a vast deal of gossip. In our last report we mentioned that there were some fussy inquiries after this stock at the increased rate of 70, but stated we' had good reasons for believing that these offers to purchase at that price were not genuine. Our statement was perfectly cor- rect; the offers to buy at 70 were merely a little bit of finesse to rush up the quota- tions. This morning we have heard several dealers breathlessly offering to Invest in Luzons at 67; but singularly enough these offers have resulted in nothing. Mean- while wild rumours, some of them of a most comical character, are rapidly circulating, throughout the Colony. The latest report is that the eminent firm who are General Agents of the Company are going to take up all the shares, on dit about 1600, bought by a certain speculator, and it is again hinted that it is not impossible they will also redeem at par the whole of the shares bought by unfortunate traffickers who have got stuck." We should think these absurd reports are merely invented and made use of for the purpose of rigging the market. We stated some time ago, that in our opinion, the General Agents had al-May 26, Berenica Austro-Hungarian steamer, ready done more fur, the shareholders than May 26, Chinkiang, British str., for Shanghai.

Colombo, and Bombay. they were called upon to do, and we still May 26, Pacasco, British str., for Nagasaki. hold that view, notwithstanding the latest rumour from Manila, which is to the effect that the machinery to be given to the Refinery consists of some old charcoal pans, &c.

4

o'clock p.nt. Since mon a few unimportant sales in various stocks have been reported. Banks have been negociated at 180 per cent. pre- mium for the end of the mouth, and a few more shares would probably be taken up at the same rate. Chinese Insurances have changed hands at 215, the stuck leaving off firm, with buyers at the quotation. Some time translers of Luzons at 67 for May 31st have also been arranged. Nothing else'requires special reference.
