The Chinese Minister at Berlin left the metro- polis on the 17th inst. for Rome, and is accom. Pied on his journey by his German interpreter, Doctor Kruger. His Excellency Li-Fong-Pao is accredited to the Italian Court as well as Berlin, and therefore is obliged to take his abode at Rome for a short while,

With reference to the statement that has been made that the Naval Squadron in China was to be shortly reinforced by the despatch of either the Ajar or Agamemnon, we believe that there is no truth whatever in the report. Such a class of ship would only be required as a flagship, and the Audacious has only just recently been detalled for this duty, and all other requisite changes have been made for the present with regard to relief and recommission of vessels.. These have already been reported by us from time to time.

The following naval appointments to the China Station are gasdited-Lieutenants: Gonton Glennie, Richard B. Newland, Francis S. Om maney, William Hewetson, Robert D. S. Wrey, and Frederick R. W. Morgan to Curaços. Sub Liculenant: Cecil W. Ashby to Ceraton, recom, missioned. Midshipmen: Thomas 5. G. New bold, Carlton V. de M. Cowper, Phillip Walter, Randal T. M. Berkeley, George W. W. The scratch mice between Canton four-cared cutters was brought to an issue on Saturday afternoon and, after an interesting race for three. parts of the journey, resulted in an easy win for Lane's crew in the Kornblume. The weather was not favorable for rowing, a stiff breeze blow ing, whilst the water was very humpy. A course was selected from near Kellet's Island to the Bath House. Several minor alterations were made in the crews at the last moment, Shepherd taking Rutter's place in the Shumireck, and Prosch superseding Leffmann in the Kornblume. Mr. R. Murray Smith, Agent-General for the colony of Victoria, has published a pamphlet on the position of Victorian finance. The debentures of the colony he contends, are entitled to rank amongst invest- ments of the highest class.

Without any trouble Mr. Woodin, who oficiated as starter, got the three boats in a line and despatched them on their journey on even terms. For the first dozen strokes there was no change in their positions, the three contestants keeping well together, aud all of them, even at this early stage, ruwing in wretched style. Lockhart was the first to show in front, gradually drawing ahead until after going a third of the distance he led by nearly a length, the other pair still close together. The fire certainly started in the rooms occupled by the Chinese Chin-chew and clerks, and the smoke strongly smelt of opium and rags. origin of the fire is therefore obvious.

The

It was only when the volumes of smoke which poured down the stoke-holé choke the fires and put them out, that the men came upon deck and started assisting to lower the I appeal boats for the sake of the passengers.
