At a meeting of the Church Congress the Bishop of Victoria (Hongkong) read a paper on the sub- ject of "Medical Missions and Woman's Work." The universal prejudice of the Chinese against the English and their pride of race formed a powerful barrier against missionary effort. In these circumstances medical missions were the Best nieans of spreading the Gospel, Another reason for adopting this method of Evangelisa- stitute of a rational system of medicine. Cock- roaches, deer's horns, and dragons occupied prominent places in the Chinese pharmacopoeia. They had, too, a superstition against surgical operations, and it was thought an accursed thing that a man should lose a limb or dic in a less perfect state than that in which he was born. Opiuni smoking was another obstacle to the teaching of the truth. Thus the enlightened efforts of missionaries who had had competent medical training were calculated to de untold physical as well as moral and religous good to the native population. Opium was the great curse of China, for which we were largely responsible Converts were required if it could be done with safety to health to give up opium smoking, and such cases could only be safely dealt with by medical men, Women's work might also largely be in the form of medical missions, and were with pedical training were required to deal with the Chinese women, to whom foreigners of the other sex were denied all access. He was founding a new medical mission in a yet unopened port in China, for which he pleaded for assistance.
