the sailors claim the Superintendent of the O. and 0. 5. S. Company, when he became cogni- zint of this fact, did all in his power to effect their removal from the vessel, in order that a crew of Chinainen might be engaged at a salary of $15 per month. The oflicers of the ship, it is also claimed, were instructal to use every elfart induce them to leave, and since their arrival e they have been treated like dogs. The sailors, although they have not been actually maltreated, say that they have been worked to death, and called upon to perform services when there was no necessity for any work to be done. They were also furnished peal- tickets at a certain restaurant along the wharves, where the food was not fit to eat, and most of them were in the habit of going to other places and paying for their meals out of their own pockets, They also complain that when they arrived here they were rentoved from their cosy quarters in the forecastle and placed in the forward hold, which was occupied during the voyage by the Chinese, and which was full of dirt and vermin. The forecastle itself, the steward says, was built in Liverpool by the orders of the Mercantile_Board_of Trade," to fumish sleeping accommodation for twenty-four men fifteen on one side and nine on the other. These bunks, it is alleged, the Superintendent of the Company on Wednesday last oidered to be broken up, al since then twenty additional berths have been built. These are supposed to be for the ac- commodation of a Chinese crew. In addition to

They acknowledge that this was their own fault, but state in extend- ation that the officers of the vessel told them that they were at liberty to go ashore whenever they so desired, as their services were no longer required. They also refused to ship them back to England according to the terni. of the agree- ment, but offered to give them to bonus to leave the vessel and take their chances of getting home.

The statements of the officers of the vessel and the Company's Superintendent, however, contra- dict, in every panicular, the stories of the sailurs, and seem to be far more worthy of belief. The officers describe them as a dunken, worthless sort of fellows, who are not inclined to work, and indent in the extreme. Mr. Sampson, the GARRISON second officer, acknowledged that they were anxious to get rid of them, but insisted that they were perfectly justified in so doing, They were an use in the world, and even when they con- descended to work, did it in such a slovenly man- ner that they were obliged to compel them to go over it two or three times more. They had been trying to get rid of them ever since the vessel left Liverpool, and be thought that they had at “last succeeded. · A number of them bad shipped on out-going vessels, and the few remaining would doubtless leave in a few days.
Mr. Bryan, the Superintendent of the Com- pany, corroborates these statements in every par
icular, and says that the company are perfectly right in trying to get rid of the crew. He also states that when the vessel arrived at Hongkong the men themselves made the proposition in the of the Company, that if they were paid a bonus of $go they would leave of their own 30- cord. This proposal was refused, and the sailors then determined to come to San Francisco. The bonus of $to, which seven of them have received in this port, according to his statements, was not offered by the Company, but the seamen then- selves itide the overtuies and agreed to take it. As far as the question of the Company's being obliged to retain the men on board for two years, was concerned, that was all nonsense,
The arti
cies of agreement stated that they were to serve for a lerin not to exceed that time, and it was in

We are informed that on closing the accounts of the ball given in the Masonic Hall, on the 16th March last, a balance of $412.71 appeared to the credit, which has been handed to the Masonic Charity Fund.
We take an opportunity of reminding people who prefer to pay Tls. 4 for the M. C. Daily News that our contemporary has a list of private subscribers to which half price is charged. There is no suspicion of its being merely an allowance to people of small means, since a printed circular was sent round seme time ago, offering to place a number of people who are unquestionably very well off on the list of private subscribers at Tis. 12 per annum, payable half yearly in advance, and expressing a hope that their fist of private subscribers would be increased. We desire to aid their wishes by giving them publicity...
The agreement between the contractors and the Ningpe carpenters and masons has not yet been definitely settled; the contractora yicided to the demands of the workmen so far as to allow thema third meal of rice cach day, and to pay them a few more cash, but not the full amount they demanded. The agreement on these terms was drawn up at the guild in the City, but we bear it has not been signed yet, or stamped with the guild chop The Ningpo workmen, however, were so far contented with the achieve nent of their ends, that they were resuming work in some places yesterday; and now the Shanghai workmen have got their backs up, are on strike, and intimidating the Ningpu men.
Some dis- turbances took place this morning between Ningpo and Shanghai men, but nothing serious occurred. There may be some trouble before the affair is settled,
In view of the possible stoppage of the route to the East by the Suez Canal, in case of hostili ties in Egypt, the following comparison of the respective distances by the Canal and the Cape will be interesting-
