think I have mentioned this band before, when they first performed in public. The whole have been taught to play the various instruments that go to make up a band, and now play remarkably well fram notes. The bandsmen are young Chi nese lads who, Mr. Bigel says, learn to read music very quickly, and keep excellent time. Why should not your Municipal Council try the same plan these Chinese lads are always pleasant and always sober.
Our distinguished visitors have been Sir Thomas Wade from Peking, and Aduiral Willes, C.B., from the Pigilant and several of the Officers with the Commanders of H.M.'s ships Sheldrake and Vigilant.
There is very little news to chronicle but what there is you shall have.. Miss Olga Dubbin gave an instrumental concert at the Clubs theatre Jast Wednesday, which appeared to delight our mumerous amateur pianists. The gifted lady left next day for Feking. Everyone is wondering what has brought HM. Minister to the hot plains of Tientsin when the green hills beyond l'eking are now in their first freshness, but as the Admiral ined his visit just when H.M. Minister did, peo ple think there is something more than smoke and Say that negociations are being carried on with the Viceroy so that England may have a share in the opening o

The nines here are that China luis arranged everything with Corcat to open two ports to foreign trade and is desirous that the first treaty Corea makes shall be with the United States, it being supposed that that government will be more liberal in her treatment of Corca, and will not press any opium clause in her treaty. It is said here that Commodore Schu. feldt has been especially appointed to neguciate the treaty, The Corean Ambassador left here in the Chinese gun-boat Tsaukiang last month. I think it very probable that when the Viceroy has arranged with 11.M.'s Minister the treaty, or arrangements for trade with Corca, we will see the Admiral and Sir Thomas Wade leave here in the Vigilant for Chefoo and join in procession.

TO THE EDITOR of the “Hostsgong, TerezarAPH.” St-Has it ever struck you the unbusiness like manner in which some of the business bouses here do their work? In Europe, shop- keepers are always civil (it pays them to be so), in Hongkong where there is comparatively no competition or opposition, they are not always so. This is, I suppose, because there is no "next door," however, it would take nothing off their retail prices to treat their customers with a little courtesy. The practice too of sending their Dills roumi in open envelopes, is most objection. able, and 1 fail to see what is gained by leaving the envelopes open. A Chinaman hands you 50 or 1oo Bills, and you "finger" over them till you and your own, taking a cursory glance at your neighbours. I am ashamed to acknowledge it, but it is a fact, some ladies, ever inquisitive, take Lawee peep" inside.
If you share my opinion concerning these bus- iness houses, will you kindly insert this matter in your Telegraph, and force it upon the minds of the European shopkeepers to whom it refers.

The Bunding scheme for extending the bund from the French Settlement to the Viceroy's Ya- men has been given up, and in place of it two good roads are to be made, both toads, leaving the Taku Road at the top of the French Settle- ment, one leading to the south, and the other to- wards the East Gates of the City. With respect to Wharfage duca which H.M.'s Minister stopped the collection of the other day, I notice frain a circular going round to-day that the collection has
been again authorized by H.M.'s Consul. These dues are to be divided between the two settle- ments and the Chinese authorities; and will go to keeping the bund in order, and the making of the roads above mentioned.
I have
just heard that the Viceroy has sent a strong petition to the throne to be allowed to re- tire, and go into mourning for at least one year. The Chinese say he is very anxious to retire from office altogether, that he is getting old and feels the worry and anxiety connected with his high office tell upon his health. I hear some of the

Advices from New York, March 30, state that while the Luzon, from Manila for New York, was lying to in a dense fog on March 27, at to p.m., in lat. 38.50, long. 73.40, she was run into by the Havilah, from Messina for New York, carrying away lower forestaysail and maintop. gallantyard and cross jacks, suashed rail and head chainplates and channels and other slight damage about the deck. The Havilah had her jibboom and all attached, foreyard foretopgail-IMPO animast, yards, sails, &c, carried away, and broke main rail.
The composite gun vessel, Wanderer, now building at Middlesbrough-on-Tees, will be taken to Sheerness Yard to complete, at a cost of 1,500. The vessel is of the steel-composite class-soft. long, 36ft. wide, and oft 6in. depth of hold. She will have engines of 750-horse power, and will steam twelve knots per hour. Being constructed mainly upon the model of the Chinese gunboats or rather, floating gun-carriages, as designed by Mr. Rendal, the new Admiralty Civil Lord- she will be armed with one 12-ton and two 6-

He has, received the Crimean, Turkish, and China medals, the Sebastopol and Canton clasps, the Fifth Cl of the Order of the Mediidie, and is Keybf the Legion of Honour. Captain John Fennes will be Flag Captain to Vice-Admiral Dowell. He was born in 1843, and entered the Royal Navy in
1856. He served in the Ariel and the Highflyer from 1860-68, on the East Coast of Africa, in the suppression of the slave kado, being swise wounded in severat boat - gagements with piratical slave dhows; and was niso wounded in an attack on the Kati Forts, in solicited.
