THE regalar monthly meeting of Lodge St. John, No. GB, S.C., will be held in Freemason's Hall, Zetland Street, this evening, at 8.3o precisely. Visiting brettern will be made cordially welcome. WE are informel by the agents, Messrs. Adam- son, Bell Co., that the steamer Keumture Castle, from London, arrived at Singapore on

To-day's Advertisements.

ST. JOHN LODGE OF HONGKONG, No. 618, 'S.C.

Saturday fast, and will start for Hongkong to day. A REGULAR LODGE will be hekl at

ABOUT five o'clock on Saturday evening, a bum- bontman, while standing on the steam-launch wharf at Yan-nah-tee, dropped down dead, from heart disease, it is thought. The body was sent to the Civil Hospital,

WE would remind our readers of the performance of Venli's popular opera "Il Trovatore," at the Theatre Royal, City Hall, by the Italian Opera Company, this evening, commencing at ŋ o'clock. This will be the company's last appearance in Itongkang.

JAPAN.

We read is native papers that it has been found that a hot spring in the precincts of the Iwojt temple, situated on Idzuyana (dza pro- vince) emits gold dust mixed with the sand ejected. Specimens have been forwarded to the Home Departmetil..

General Torio Keyata, who has been in retire- ment for some time, and as to whose future carcer various rumours have been circulated, was re- ceived in audience by the Emperor on the 21st instant, and appointed Presideni of the Board of Statistics in the Privy Council.

The Fiji Shimpe now asserts that, as was previously reported, His Imperial Highness Prince Arisugiwa, Second Minister of State, will shortly be despatched to Russia to attend the Czar's coronation, and that Mr. Hayashi, one of the Chief Secretaries of the Public Works De partment, has already been appointed to accom pany him.

The Tochi Shimbun publishes a despatch that, vexed by the oppression of their landlords, more than one thousand cuttiers in Tokuman and the vicinity in Inaba province, assembled in a temple on the 12th instant, intending to march upon and destroy the farmers' houses but that a palice force, promptly despatched to the spot, prevented the outbreak of disturbance.

The Nichi Nichi Shimbun contains the two following telegrams, dated Nagasaki the 24th instant-

Five Japanese residents of fignanshin have been attacked by Cuicans. Of these, lasumoto, a pupil of the Hongwanji, was killed, and two others are dangerously wounded.

On the 31st ultimo five nich, named Hasumoto, Tani, Kodama (of the Okura-gumi) Obuchi (of the Mitsu Bishi Company) and Hamate were attacked at An-pen by Corcans, Hasumoto was at once killet, and Obuchi and Kodama re- ceived dangerous wounds. The others, Tani and Hamate escaped safe.

The Nichi Nichi Shimbun publishes a tric gram from its Kioto correspondent to the effect that at 10 p.m. on the 23rd instant the convicts in the jail there mutinied, set fire to the place, and effected their escape.

Chaling at the non-fulfilment of its erst pre- diction that the

Tramway from Shimbashi to Uyeno would be completed before the full spring blooming of the cherry flowers, now, alas, filling like the Hochi Shimbun, probably jesting with sad art, says that the construction is post- poned up a measure for the reconstruction of resuls, at present under the consideration of the Tokiyo Fu assembly, shall be approval.

It is mentioned that the Chinese Minister, in honour of his new appointment, has invited the Ministers of State, Privy Councilors, and foreign Representatives to a grand banquet an the 2nd proximo.

A native paper says that Bin Sho Moku, a nephew of the Queen of Corea, who cante in Japan last year and ads progressive opinions, has been urging upon his Government to open Corea to foreign intercourse, but that, owing to the obstinately conservative ideas still prevalent in the Soal Cabinet, he has been unsuccessful.

The Mainichi Shimbun says that the iron- clad Adsunia Kas is now so old, her armour so impaired, and her hull itself so rotten, that to re- pair her would require an outlay of at least 100,000 yen; and that even then she could not last many years. It has therefore been decide to make only the repairs imperatively necessary, and to convert her into a Roating fort.

We are informed that shortly after the arrival of the S. S. Sunda from Hongkong, the customs officials, whose suspicions had been aroused, stopped some of the dirty linen landed by the waskermen from the vessel in the usual routine, and discovered that it had been made the cloak for smiggling opium. The indiscretion of some one or other led to the prime mover getting wind of this: or if not the prime mover, at any rate one of the saloon boys who had been several years in the company's employ na deserted, and his whereabouts is not yet ascertained. He may be now some miles on his way back to the Flowery Land rejoicing in his own inmunity and the success of past ventures, as boldly and more successfully effected,

Native papers contain the following telegrams respecting the reported disturbance in Coren, of which we published news on Saturday last:-- The Mitsu Bishi Company have received from the Tsuruga Mare, which left Gensanshin, Corca, on the 17th instant the following telegram dated Nagasaki the zoth instant :-Obuchi Yo- shinori an employé of the company. at Gensan. shin, has been heaten near that place and severely but not mortally wounded. A priest of the Hong. wanji has been killed and a member of the Okurs. guni seriously injured. Great excitement pre. Vails in the settlement, but matters are not so serious as to cause a rupture between Japan and Carca. The Mainichi Shimbun notes that no date is given as to when the riot occurred, but that it must evidently have been before the 17th instant, on which day the Tsuruga Maru left. -Mail.
