FOOCHOW

(FROM CUR OWN CORRESPONDENT)

March 30th, Since my last notes, we have had a varied experience in the state of the atmosphere and weather in general, the temperature varying from the fifties to the eighties. A few days rain also have we been favored with, and now the weather is a veritable spring

Last week ene of the Arsenal Gunboals was sent outside to look after some pirate junks, two, I believe, which have been in the vicinity of the alan Straits for the past month of 50,-- pursuing their aefarious trade. The gunboat returned the day before yesterday after an un- 'successful search for the pirates.

The Governor of the province, H.E. Chen Yu Ying, who is now in Formosa, has paid a visit of inspection to the Formosan pétroleum wells, and it is said that .. intends memorializing the throne in order to obtain permission to have them workel, though .. is not in favor of foreigners undertaking this enterprise. From the reports of the Governor to the Viceroy, a great source of revenue may be derived from these oil wells, and as the Viceroy pays great atten- tion to whatever the Governor may suggest, it is not at all improbable that the scheine will be carried out; but is what manner, remains to be

Apropos of Formosa, it is reported here that the extensive cual fields and mines at Keelung and elsewhere in the Island, are to be leased by a company of rich Chinese merchants and others. The proposed terms, as far as I can learn, are that the company is to supply the Chinese Navy with cual free of expense, and to pay a royalty of so much per ton upon all cut-turn of coal at the

it's mouth.

The Merchan-Gunboat movement is still in full sway, and large consignments of the New Formusan Teas are anticipated this season, for this part for the purpose of mixing" with Foo- chow Teas for the American market.

A large fire, consuming 138 houses and shops, occurred in the suburbs last week and two persons, both men, are reported as having been burnt. The origin of the fire, germinated in a varnish: shop, a lot of methylated spirit, which was being distilled for varnish manufacture, having "bited ver," the flames spread with great rapidity, and, aidcil by a strong NW. wind, the numerous houses &c. burnt like tinder, the usual efficient (?) Chinese methods of extinguishing a fire being set at naught.

It is reported that engineers from Tientsin are coining to this port to ascertain what mining (qual) prospects there are in this province, with a view towards opening up the same. It may be and quite likely too-that the Chinese wish to know what their mineral resources actually are, as they seem to be in a semi-stale of ignorance on the subject.

There has been comparatively little rain as yet up country, and several native tea-men whom I have conversed with, say that the producers of the leaf anticipate a very heavy crop, and that the rain will be just a sufficiency to ensure the

same,

Under the careful and judicious management of our worthy American Consul, Mr. Wingate, our little settlement is beginning to assunte a glorious countrified aspect, the trees planted last year by the road sides, have for the most part faken root and are commencing to sprout forili Juxariant verdure. More trees are now being planted and a few years note will see Foochnw, or rather Nantai, a thoroughly picturesque "country" place.

In consequence of a lot of spurious "cash" nates being in circulation, orders have been issued by the Mandarins to regulate pelly banks, a mber of which have, in consequence bust," and their "paper" is no good." The poorer class suffer greatly in consequence,

Training for the races has assumed no very alarming state though I believe on Monday next, real "heavy work will commence. The course is in splendid condition, though pertraps a trifle hand. The quires closed list Saturday ani! present a fait appearance and good sport may be anticipated.

A Court case came off at the British Consulate

a few days ago which presented some very curious features. It seems that in-a certain fimm in this place one of the partners sued the firm for damages consequent upon ejectment. The lit gants were not Europeans, though British sub jects. The plaintiff had his case pleaded by a Chinaman, and it was adduced in evidence at the Court that this same Chinaman who was pleading the case of the plaintiff, had been the main or principal cause of the ejectment of the plaintiff from the firma in question, a letter from this guari Chinese lawyer having been produced in Court wherein all that could be said that was detrimental to the plaintiff and his business standing, was expressed in black and white. The gunst Lawyer in explaining as to the intent of the letter said that he meant a harm (F) to the plaintif" but the learned judge in dismissing the case said "that

certain letters had poisoned the minds of the people in... and that the plaintiff must mainly owe his non-suit to this fact," or words to that effect. The case was dismissed with costs, though it is said that a motion for a new trial will be made.

There is a new era in the state of commercial status in the Far East. Commission Merchants (7) seem to be the order of the day, Even Chinese bave felt the benefits of advertising, or are so endeavouring to do, if one is to judge by our local paper. I very much fear such advertise meats are misleading, as one is very often apt to believe that a European is meant when a Chinese cognomen is given à l'European, as in the present cake.

There are four sailing vessels in port, and two aleamers, the latter of which close to-day, one for Shanghai and one for Hongkong.

The fire last night broke out in the Oriental spinning and Weaving Company's Branch Mill at Colaba, and proved to be the largest ever known in Bombay. It originated on the second storey in the Mili, in the Mule Department: but its origin has not yet been ascertained. Unfor- tunately there was but little water available, and the fire soon obtained such complete mastery, TN accordance with Ordinance No. 6 of 1875. that the firemen confined their efforts to save the surrounding buildings, in which they were suc- cessful. The Mills were soon completely guited. Their value is estimated at about eight faklis, and they were fully insured in the Commercial Union," "Royal," "Queen," "London," and "Globe Insurance Companies.

The Chief has been urged not to delay bis journey, and the Khan has replied he will shortly start. It is no secret, says the Gazette, that the Lalpura Chief believes that the Cabul visit, al- ready postponed half a dozen times, will be at tended with great personal risk. Had he gone, when first invited months ago, it is possible he might have ingratiated himself with the Ameer. The Khan sent his brother instead, but the Ameer insists on the Chief's presence.

In spite of his promise, the Khan may yet stay at home,
