HONGKONG, THersday, April 6, 1882.
We extract from Capital ant Labour the following interesting article on "Chinese Progress," and we note, with great satis faction, the increasing attention given in England to Chinese matters. The United States is perhaps still more alive to the advantage of maintaining good relations with China, and one of the reasons given for Li HENG-CHANG's determination in sending back fifty students to America which we chronicled yesterday, is that he also wishes to pay a compliment to that great nation which above all others has treated China with fairness and considera- tion, We welcome this indication of the times, and are glad to see the commerce of the two countries developing rapidly, and extensively:-

The value of the fleet of twenty steamers, with a carrying capacity of 20,000 tons, has been written down to a comparatively fair sum. The liabilities also have been very much reduced. The last report, issued in June last, puts the share capital down at 1,000,000 taels, the borrowed capital at 1.100.000, and the Government loan at a million and a half. The net profit was about 21 per cent. Although the principal operations of the company have been carried on along the coast, two vessels took

Indeed, if we remember rightly, our critic had not even received an invitation to the entertainment, but would appear to have sneaked in, determined on a merciless slaughter of his unsuspecting victims, the rage and profound astonishment of whom, when they saw themselves held up to public ridicule next day, can be better imagined than described. Curses both loud and satisfaction out of his detested carcase being even deep were freely invoked on the critic's head, spoken of, though never, we believe, exacted. A residence of some years in the East has, we have no doubt, somewhat subdued the fire of our friend's critical ardour, and we think it likely that he now looks back upon the occurrence with almost as much astonishment as possessed his unhappy vic. timus on reading his cruel onslaught. It lacked, however, one desirable feature, the absence of which, we think, detracted considerably from its enjoyment, and that was, any vocal effort on the part of our lady residents. A concert from which the dulcet warblings of the fair sex is absent, must always be mare or less in- sipidy, and we hope the management will bear this in mind on the next occasion. Knowing the readiness with which the ladies of Hongkong come foe the dy gond huse, we think there ought to be little difficulty in scouring the services of several accomplished lady vocalists, of whom there are many in Hongkong, for all the Tem perance Hall concerts.
