THE NEW ROMAN CATHOLIC
CATHEDRAL.
The following interesting descrip- tion of the proposed usw Roman Catho- lic Cathedral för Hongkong is taken from our Linton contemporary the
Building News --
This design has been propared in. consequence of the old cathedral church having become unsuitable for the grow. ing congregation. A new site has been obtained at the junction of the Caino and Arbuthnot-roads, on which it is proposed to erect this now cathedral, with presbytery and palace immediately adjoining. The ground is somewhat restricted in aron, and has bosides the disadvantage of being, ou à rapid slopa, rising at the north-west corner to the height of 16ft above the general level of tho ground, but this is no uncommon feature in this neighbourhool, whore the adjoining hills attain an altitule of 1,800 feet at a distance of less than two miles from the beach. The church has a nave 28ft. wide with side aislos, to- gather Gift wide, double transepta, chancol containing the high altar, and sanctuary with ambulatory running around the apse for processions, four small chapels for special de. votional purposes, baptistery and tower. The latter will contain a complete chime of bolls, and is not made lofty in ont- liao on account of the ground imme| diately adjoining rising high above it. The sacristy communicates directly with the presbytery. An external passage way for religious processions runs all around the entire elifice quite opon to the sky, except at certain parts where, by means of easy gradients, it passos under the east chapels forming short groined cloistors. The total length of the church is 206ft. inter- nally, and the entire width across the transopts is 80ft. With the assistance of thron large galleries, sitting accom- modation has been obtained for about 2,000 persons. The two side galleries in the transepts will pack hold a fiac organ, the congregation being fond of cultivating high class musical their religious accompaniments in services. There three public entrances, the principal one of course being at the end of the nave, the one from Caine-rond is on a level with the gallery, and the other has a tunnel entrare from Arbuthnot-road, being below the level of the floor of the

NINGPO.
The N. C. Daily News correspondent, writing from Ningpo on the 10th inst. says:We are having a visit from one of the Princes, who went into the City yesterday to see the Pagoda and other interosting objects that are worthy of a visit. Probably the officers of the. two ships will pay a visit to so ne of the stone-carvers on the south site of the river, who are doing some work to go abroad.
Some friends aro interesting then- selves to have meetings with the men from the ships, and it is to be hopal a meeting of subscribers will be held to elect some gentlemen who have kindly consonted to serve on the Committee. It will at least be more satisfactory to the gentlemon themselves, and an encouragement to others who have re- fasal to subscribe on the ground that they did not kapw how the money was expouded.

After the large amount of business trans- noted on the Stook Brohange during the past few days, a temporary lull in the transfer of shares was only to be expected. Banks after holding's firm position at 120 per cent. premium, are alightly weaker this morning, and one or two lots have been offered at that rate for cash, without leading to business. Sugars have also been inquired after, and
although we have heard of no definite offers
to buy at 158, we think from the character of the inquiries, that if shares were forth coming at that price, they would be quickly taken up. Docks show a still farther im provement, as after sales at 34 per cent. premium, both for cash and the end of the month, the demand increased, and 36 was frooly paid for all the shares that could be obtained. Offers to buy at 86 this morning have not been responded to, and as confidence in the stock would appear to have been restored, there can be little doubt that a higher rate will be paid before the end of the week. Business in other stooks has been temporarily suspended. Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corpo

RUSSIA AND PERSIA.
The complaints anticipated as to the violation of Russian territory by Persian subjects are already beginning to be board from the new Russo-Persian frontier. M. Sinowieff, the Russian Minister at Teheran, has boon ordered to address the Shiah formally on the subject of the depredations said to bo committed by bauds of Persian robbers on Rassia's new subjects, the Tekkes. It was the marauding and slave-seizing propensities of the latter which compell. od Russia to undertake her advance in Central Asia and the subjagation of the Akklal Tekke basin, but now the Per- sians are the offenders, and Russia maay find further stops necessary. Mean- while Tikma Sirdar, the Tekko chief, who visited St. Petersburg, and was completely gained over to the Russian. cause, has been sent on what appears to have been a very successful mission to Morv. He is reported to havo re- turnal, accompanied by large numbers of his tribe who had flad after the fall of Geok Tepo, and by a depatation consisting of fifty elders of the Mery Turcomans. The deputation" roached Askhabad, the Russian contre of admi. nistration, on Sept. 15. Taey were- received with every honour, and re- turned home laden with presents, and much impressed with the frioulliness of the Russians. The Governor of the province has been making a tour along tho Persian frontier to obtain the in for gatiou necessary for its deli.
propar mitation. No Persian Commissioners wars sont to acɔɔ'npaay him, and it is -quite-probable-that-the matter will be loft entirely to the Russians to settle definitely and practically by the armed occupation of what they consider the more important points on the line they may prefer to adopt.-Telegraph.
