expensive one, and is indulged in by: almost everybody who knows any- thing of, or is at all interested in, the sport. The Shangliai Race Club can therefore always depend upon nume- rous entries and large fields of com- petitors. In Hongkong, however, there are only three or four sports- men who could be depouded upon as supporters of the annual races con- ducted as of old. Race-ponics of tried merit cost a large sum before they can be landed here, which is a sufficient explanation in itself, why, without the subscription system, the racing would be confined to three or four stables with the enevitable re- salt that the sport would prove, as has always been the case under such circumstances, of an uninteresting and colourless character.

In previous years active participa- tion in training has usually lasted from six weeks to two months. This season the interest in our race meet- ing will extend from the beginning of November to the end of February, a period of four months. To all true lovers of sport and to those who seck health from the bracing morning air as well as amusement at the race- course, this innovation will be re- garded as a step in the right diree- tiou. As previously aunounced, it has been decided to have the sub- scription griffins, thirty-eight in number, sent down from Shanghai about the middle of October, so that there ought to be a good show of racers on the spot when the course is formally opened for training pur- poses on November 1st. From the beginning of November up to the first day of the races, the amusement and sport associated with training operations should never cease.
