It was mainly owing to the exortions of the gallant soldier that the block of buildings at San Jacinto was saved from the flaines.

Some of them, indeed, were unable to descend the stairs owing to the flames which now raged below, so they were compelled to force their way into the next house, and from there safely reached the street. The hotel, being built of wood, as a safeguard against earthquakes, offered no resist. abes to the devouring element, which carried all before it. INTELLIGENCE. Monday, September 26th, 1881.
One o'clock P.M.
Banks have at last made a move, and on Saturday a fair amount of cash business was booked at 112: We have also to note a good many sales at the same price this morning, and should imagine that altogether nearly 300 shares must have changed hands. The Dock Company's shares are still a drug on the market, offers to sell at 42 per cent. premium failing to attract pur. chasers, and probably a lower rate would not be responde. to just at pro- sent. Steamboats are on offer at 25 per share premium, but no transfers
have come under our
observation.
Plenty of Sugars are also on the market and although we quote them at 162 per share, it must be understood they are decidedly weak at that figure, in fact wo fancy they could be procured without any trouble at a lower rate, There are still offers to buy Hotels at 112, but, so far as we have heard, no actual business has rosultel. Other stocks remain at annexed rates.

His Excelioucy the Governor-Gen- oral, the Marques de Estella, who had just returned from the theatre whon the alarm was first given, immediately repaired to the scene of the conflagra- tion, accompanied by the Brigadier de Estado and the Civil Governor. There were also present the judges of the different districts, and the commanders and officers of the different corps, and many others, all of whom lent ready aid in extinguishing the fire. A dotach ment of European seamen from the Marques del Duere were on the spot, and worked with a spirit and determi- nation worthy of all praise.
