THE BRITISH SHIP "HINDOSTAN "

IN A TYPHOON.

The British ship Hindostan, of 1,547 | tous burden, Captain George Joshua Balyor, owned by Messrs. Neven and Walsh, of Liverpool, and bound from Bombay to San Francisco with a cargo of old railway iron, arrive here on the night of the 19th instant, dismasted. She reports: Left Bombay on the 13th July last, with the ordinary won- ther of the S.W. monsoon down to the Malacca Straits, thence had squally and calm weather up to Singapore. Passed latter port on the 14th August with fine fresh monsoon up the China Sca until the 21st when we experienced a heavy westerly gale with strong N.E. swell; hove to at 6 p.m. on the star- board tack, wind then hauled to the N.W. with a threatening appearance; barometer 29.50 at 4 a m.

The wea ther then moderating and drawing to the S.W.; kept away on her course again with very fine weather and high glass and had SE. to S.W. winds up to the 24th August, when we roached the Ballintang Channel and passed the British ship Tubal Cain, 60 miles W.S.W. of Sabatan Island, bound from Singapore to San Francisco. Passed Sabatan Island at 6 p.m., when we be- gan to shorten sail as it was then blow. ing a fresh breeze from N.W. At 8 p.m. wind freshening and weather threatening with sharp lightning to the N.E. with a falling barometer. 10 p.m. took in all sails but fore and main lower topsails, ship running to the eastward to get clear of the land. At midnight fierce squalls with rain from W.N.W. At 3 a.m. hove ship to, with her head to the southward, when the lower fore-topsail blow away; set reefed spanker to keep ship to the wind when that also blew away. At 7.30 p.m., on the 25th ultimo, the squalls and rain were something ter- rifio, when the main lower-topsail blew clean away; got a sail spread in the mizen rigging to keep the ship to the wind; barometer still falling, but light- ing a little between the squalls. Bar. 29.30. At 10 am. in lat. 20:16 N., long, 122.17 E. experianced a most ter rific squall with heavy rain causing the main mast to go by the board oar- rying the fore and mizen masts along with it, the spars, yards, &c.; damaged deck house, and smashed one of the boats; immediately got the axes to work to cut away the wreck, the ship meanwhile rolling heavily barometer

All the moveables and fur. aiture in the ship were either washed away or broken, the ships stores mixed together or otherwise rendered unless, and the fresh water casks smashed and their contents lost, which necessitated the crew being placed on short sup plies. The vessel will require exten- sive repairs to render her fit for further service.
