RIFLE COMPÉTITION AT
KOWLOON...
No less than twenty-three com- petitors answered to their names in the shooting sweepstakes promoted by Lieut. Charley and Mr. W. Duoman, on Saturday last, and a very exciting con- test resulted. The conditions were seven shots each at 200, 500, and 600 yards, with the, Martini-Heury rifle, any position. Lient. Charley was eventually returned the winner with the good score of 89 out of a possible 105. Sergeants Norris and Barnes, with scores of 82 and 80, hoing second and third respectively. The wind was not favourable for good shooting, and the light at the last two ranges was very deceptive. Appended are the scores;~~

THE BRITISH SHIP "HINDOSTAN " IN A TYPHOON.
|
The British ship Hindustan, of 1,547 tous burden, Captain Georgo Joshua Belyen, owned by Messrs. Novan and Walsh, of Liverpool, and bound from Bombay to San Francisco with a cargo of old railway iron, arrived here on the night of the 10th instant, dismasted. She reports: -Left Bombay on the 13th July last, with the ordinary wea- ther of the S.W. monsoon down to the Malacca Straits, thenco had squally and calm weather up to Singapore. Passed lattor port on the 14th August with fine fresh monsoon up the China Sea until the 21st when we experienced a heavy westerly gale with strong N.E. swell; hove to at 6 p.m. on the star. board tack, wind then hauled to the N.W. with a threatening appearance; barometer 29.50 at 4 am. The wea. ther then moderating and drawing to the S.W.; kept away on her coarse again with very fine weather and high glass and had SE. to S.W. winds up to the 24th August, when we reached the Ballintang Channel and passed the British ship Tubal Cain, 60 miles W.S.W. of Sabatan Island, bound from Singapore to San Francisco. Passed Sabatan Island at 6 p.m., when we be- gau to shorten sail as it was then blow. ing a fresh breeze from N.W. At 8 p.m.wind, freshening and weather threatening with sharp lightning to the NE, with a falling barometer. At 10
p.r. took in all sails but fore and main lower topsails, ship running to the eastward to get clear of the land. At midnight fierce squalls with rain from W.N.W. At 3 a.m. hove ship to, with her head to the southward, when the lower fore-topsail blew away; set reefed spanker to keep ship, to the wind when that also blew away. At 7.30 pm, on the 25th ultimo, the squalls and rain were something ter- rifle, when the main lower-topsail blew clean away; got a sail spread in the mizon rigging to keep the ship to the wind; barometer still falling, but light- ing a little between the squalls. Bar. 29.30. At 10 am in lat 2016 N., long, 122.17 E. experianced a most ter rific squall with heavy rain causing the main mast to go by the board car- rying the foro and mizen masts along with it, the spars, yards, &c.; damaged dook house, and smashed one of the boats; immediately got the axos to work to cut away the wreek, the ship meanwhile rolling heavily barometer

down to 2015, wind W. to W.N.W. At noon blowing great guns, barometer still falling, with a slight rise between the squalls, and between 4 p.m. and midnight barometer had fallen to 29.5 On the 26th the weather began to mod- crate with a rising barometer, wind in- elining to the S.W., lay drifting and rolling about up to the 29th when the wind hauled to the East, when wo shaped a course for Hongkong. On the 3rd of September passed through the Batang Chanuel, had fine easterly winds and fine weather up to the 7th instant. in lat. 20.56 N. and long 117.22 E when the weather bagan to look threatening, with all the appear- anco of a typhoon, wind passing from N.. round to N.W. with a heavy N.E. swell; at 7 a.in. hove to again on tho port tack, barometer falling to 29.60. At noon, wind very unstead from W.N.W., barometer down to 29.40; at 10 p.m. very threatening ap- Pearance with fierce gusts of wind and heavy rain, the wind backed suddenly from WNW. to N. and back again to W. with heavy rain; barometer 29.20. Midnight the wind clearing to the southward, 6 am. wind set at S.E. with heavy rain and rising barometer. all sails and proceeded on our course and reached Hongkong on the night of the 10th. All the moveables and fur- niture in the ship wore either washed away or broken, the ships stores mixed together or otherwise rendered unless, and the fresh water casks smashed and their contents lost, which necessitated the crew being placed on short sup plies. The vessel will require exten- sive repairs to render her fit for further service.
