The State of Ireland. New York, July 1. The World's London special has the following details of the recent consus of Ireland. In some districts in Connaught and Manster whole villages are almost depopulated, and in all the population has been terribly thinuert ont. In West Cork, on the vast estate of the Countess of Kingston, there are two harlots absolutely desortel. The little village of Knock, County Mayo, where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared, contained 600 soufs in 1871; to-day, exclusive of pilgrims, there are not 30, all told. The Limerick returns tall a similar story. The roofs are fallen in upon the cabins; the marketcross is broken; grass is growing in the streets --the silence of desolation. In scoros of baronies in the west and south nearly alf the young men and womon have gone to America or England. Those loft to till the land are old people, who prefer to die where their fathers died. In some parishes the poor house con- tains almost as many people as there are outside of it. The census returns do not, however, show the full extent of depopulation. At least 12,000 agri- cultural laborers or sa to England and Scotland every year for the harvest. They live in Ireland, but Ireland does not provide them with their living.

A Talk in the House of Lords.

London, July 1.-In the House of Lords to-day, the Duke of Argyll, Lord Privy Seal, called attention to the Bessborough Commission, and denounced it as biased. The Troubles in Tunis. Taris, July 6th.-The French Consul at Tripoli has begun the same kind of agitation as that by which Roustan forced the Tunis expedition on France. But Tripoli is really a Turkish provin ce and cannot be touched without pro- voking the intervention of Europe. There are great discrepancies between the official and the press reports of the Tunisian difficulty. Both are CX- aggerated. France has determined to mobilize 100,000 troops and send them to Africa to put down the insurrection with a strong hand. It is understood that the Cabinet decides to order the bombardmet of Sfax. It is probable; The Marquis of Landsdowne (Li-however, that said bombardment oc- beral) said that, as an Irish landlord, curred yesterday. he concurred with the Duke of Agryll in thinking the report of the Commis-. sion was founded on hastily taken evi- dence.

Departure of H. M. S. Lapiring. This morning at 5.30, H. M. ship Lap- wing steamed slowly down the river, homeward bound, her officers and crew no doubt glad that their unpleasant stay here is onded. On passing the two German gunboats Wolf and Illis, which are anchored opposite the Old Dock, the crews of these two war ves- sely manned the rigging and gave three, hearty cheers in true mau-of-war style, as an expression of the goodwill and sympathy which exists between the British an I German navies. The Lap- wing coaled at the Naval Yard, and proceeded on her voyage in the after-

noon.

A.

Myburgh, President of the French Municipal Council, presided, and invit- ed the electors to express their views on the subject. The Rev. Dr. Mathew Tyson Yatos objected in very strong terms to the tramway passing his church and houso, although he would not object to it if it went round some other way. Mr. G. A. Butler objected on behalf of the China Merchants' Company to the line passing Kin-leo. yuon, as the road was too narrow there. After a short discussion the question was put to the voto, by ballot, and 53 voted in favour and 40 against the tramways.
