Although the time test is in this case no criterion of the merits of Griinble's performance, owing to the assistance obtained from a favorable errent, the pace from the start was so fast, that we feel convinced the winner of this race is entitled to very high honors. That the distance is quite correct there is no reason to doubt although the fastest mile ever swam in still water occupied 28 minutes 214 seconds (J. B. Johnson at the Welsh Harp, Hendon, June 22nd 1872), it must not be forgotten that on July 22nd 1871, II. Parker won the Amateur Championship in the Thames from Putney to Ham- mersmith in 24 min. 35 sec. which is the fastest on record.

In any case there appears little chance of the stock going much below its present quotation, Hotels are being enquired after, probably on account of the reports going round regarding the sale of the property; but up to the time of going to press, nothing has been done in the shape of actual business. Sugars are weak at 160, and we are prepared to see them quoted much lower during the next fortnight. Probably the departure of Mr. Henry Dickic, the Company's experienced manager, who leaves for home via America in the course of a week or two, may have something to do with the unsatisfactory condi tion of this stock. Several sales of China Fires are reported, but we have been unable to verify the report. Shares. Hongkong and Shanghai Banking

The China Mail of Saturday evening amounces that the Ping-on "is lying at the Sands' Slip in preparation to be docked". Our contemporary's imagina- tion has been again running riot. We had almost omitted to say that both Grimble and Goodwyn were heartily cheered for their plucky finish; and that Mr. A. K. Leigh and Mr. E. Beart officiated as starter and judge respectively.

The China Mail's report of the Great Swimming Race on Saturday was as usual, grossly inaccurate. Goodwyn was credited by our excellent contem- porary, with premier place by about a couple of lengths.
