ACTIVE MEASURES FOR DEFENCE OF PARIS
Determination Of French Army Stays Unshaken
PARÍS, June 12 (Reüter)~Surrounded by a dense smoke-screen, Paris resembles a city under siege.
Buildings are closed and windows shattered and the guarded streets are almost empty. 'Trains are ng longer teaving the city. It appears that more than three-quarters of the suburban population has left.
Taxis, crowded with up to 15 people, were seen leaving for the provinces.
"Although the Germans are still 25 miles from Paris, active mea- sures for the defence of the capital, have been taken.

The evacuation is proceeding on an extended scale, and barri- and cades are being erected in the streets around the northern western suburbs.
Special to H.K. Daily Press PARIS, June 12 (Havas)—Gen- eral Pierre Hering, military Gover. nor of Paris, interviewed by Havas, xald that the defence of the capit- al is not an isolated strategie operation but part of the defensive operations of all French armies.
Special To HK. Dally Press PARIS, June 12 (Havas)-An Air Ministry communique reports that the French Air Force is actively engaged in a violent battle going on in the Seine-Argonne valley.
Squadrons all day long attacked the enemy's mechanised units both with bombs and machine-guns. The determination of the French damaging numerous tanks

Mr. Alexander went on to com- mend the manner In which the men of the mercantile marine, the Ashermen and Ufeboat crews had contributed towards that historic performance and helped to bring it to a successful conclusion,
"The Dictators of Europe must be haunted by the problem of how long, their own cowed masses would stand up to a similar strat when it is brought home to them," said Mr. Alexander, "Our men acted in this manner because they see before them the shining trea-
sures of liberty and the way of light for the whole world which will follow ultimate victory for the Allies."
"Mr." Alexander included in his tribute the part played by the Dutch and Norwegian French, raval units, who operated with the Allies at Dunkirk and the tenacity and efficiency with which they had joined in gallantry displayed.
ADDITIONS TO STRENGTH "Our Navy suffered losses dur- ing those operations," continued Mr. Alexander. "We do not expect to win this war at sea without re-

LONDON, June 12 (BWS)-Within a few hours of Italy's entry into the war swift and determined attacks on Italian air bases in Libya and East Africa were carried out by R. A. F. bombers of the Middle East Command and by South Africa" Alt Force bombers.
They were followed up last night by the bombing of military objectives in northern Italy. The only information at present avall- able regarding this latest blow is contained in an Air Ministry com- munique which says:
"Aircraft of the R. A. F. reconnoltred northern Italy last night. Bombs were dropped on certain military objectives.”
Yesterday's lightning stroke a Libya and East Africa took the Italians completely by surprise. Comparatively little anti-aircraft fire was encountered and, although several Italian fighters got off the ground., they made no serious attempt to engage the raiders.
