HAMMOND LOST TOSS AT LAST
"Unlucky 3d Bit May Cost England Dear
-When Walter Hammond, captain of England's Test Eleven, lost the the final test match toss in ngainst South Africa, which began at Durban on Friday, March 3, it was his first such defeat in nine successive", Tests, and Indications that it will cost England
$TR
dearly.
The coin, an English threepenny pieces, was spun by A. Melville, the South Africa skipper. H. Gordon, one of his bowlers, had won it from Hutton, England's opening bata- man, in a game of snooker the previous evening. "
South Africa batted the whole of the opening, day, scoring 229 for two wickets, eventually running up the total of 530, a record for South Africa in matches against England. As things are at the time of writing, Monday evening) England are making a spirited attempt at getting the 696 runs she has been set to make to win, after eight days' play.
The position at the end of Fri- day's play (Saturday was washed „out by rain) was that for the loss of Hutton's wicket, the M.C.C. side had scored 253 runs. Edvich, get- ting going for the first time. and P. A. Gibb, were undefeated with. 107 and 78 respectively.
