HAINAN ISLAND RICE SHORTAGE
Petition Sent To Government
HAINAN ISLAND. Jan, 30 (Int/1) -The various districts in Hainan Island are experiencing an bcute shortage of rice as the result of the two devastating storms during the autumn. The searcity of this staple food is particularly severe at Holhow. The price has jumped from $1.40 per ten cattles to $2.30, and there is a tendency to continue its upward trend.
To relieve the rice famine, the chairman of the Chambér of Com- merce at Holhow sent a petition to the Central Government requesting the Finance Ministry to allow to import 100,000 plents of rice from Slam and Indo-China duty free,

ECONOMIC TALKS
BERLIN, Jan. 29 (Reuter)—The Czech Minister of Commerce is ex- pected here next week for an im-
portant series of economic talks.
It is understood that the main question to be considered is the problem of ending competition be- tween the Czech and Sudeten in- dustries,
Trade talks are also in progress between Germany and Russia, but it is strongly emphasised that only formalities are concerned, and that no extensive reduction or altern- tion in the present agreement is contemplated.
