CZECH-GERMAN TENSION IS AT CRITICAL STAGE

SHOOTING OF TWO YOUNG SUDETENS ON BORDER ADDS FUEL TO FLAME

Events in Central Europe moved at an alarming pace, during the week-end and, as the result of incidents wherein it was alleged that Sudeten Germans had been attacked in Czech towns, and two young Sudeten farmers were shot dead by Czech police at Eger, on the frontier, considerable tension exists between Germany and Czechoslovakia,

Reports state that both Germany and Czechoslovakia have moved troops to the border. Crech reservists have been called out.

The crisis has been precipitated by disturbances in connection with the Czech municipal elec- tions, which were to have been held yesterday.

Owing to alleged t-treatment of Sudetens by Chicks, the Sudeten German Party stated that it would refrain from negotiating with the Czech Government on the Nationalities' Statute as long as order was not guaranteed.

London, May 22

The Foreign Secretary returned to London from Oxford today and was at the Foreign Office this morning. He will keep in close touch with the events over the week-end and the Prime Minister, who is spending the week-end in the country, has also arranged to be kept constantly informed.

· EVIDENCE OF SINCERITY

The British action was inspired by the desire, shared by the French Government, to see an orderly and peaceful solution reached. There is evidence also of the sincerity of the Czecho-Slovak Government's response in the preparations it has made for the initiation of the con
