INSURGENT WARSHIP HIT BY TORPEDO

BY TORPEDO FROM GOVERNMENT DESTROYER

BATTLESHIP IS SUPREME

WEAPON OF DEFENCE

Majority Report Of U.S.

Naval Affairs Committee

Washington. March 6.

The battleship is the supreme weapon of national defence and is superior to aeroplanes or any other instrument of war, according to the majority report of the Naval Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives which has been investigating the Navy Expan- sion BUL

The report, made in support of President Roosevelt's proposal for three new battleships, states, "The threat of each new weapon is met by suitable and adequate measures for increase in the offen- sive qualities in the ships and, from each temporary challenge, the battleship has emerged more powerful than ever today. It supreme on the sea".

The report issues a warning that the lack of shipbuilding faci- lities on the Western coast might prove disastrous in the event of conflict in the Pacific and affirms the policy of aggressive defence. In the event of the enemy approaching the shores of the United States the necessity for retaining a technical lead in aylation is em- phasised.-(Reuter).
