Pearce Cup Hockey

HIGH STANDARD

OF GAMES

[BY CIRE)

The many spectators who braved the cold winds and went to the Central British School ground on Saturday afternoon were rewarded with some very exciting hockey at the fourth annual Seven-a-Side Tournament for the Pearce Cup. Seven teams, including the Caer Clark Cup and Brawn Cup leagues, competed and the trophy was annexed by the Hong Kong Ladies' Hockey Club, last year's winners.

The H.K. Ladies, though, did not have matters all their own way *for in the first round match against the Recrelo Ladies they only managed to score one goal, their forwards being completely wide of the mark. A sound defence was their saving grace. Miss Pur- ves, who was responsible for the goal. netted in the second half, .played well.

A goal scored by Miss Maureen Booker a few minutes from the end gave the Central British School .giris victory over the Seaforth 'Ladies who gave a very impressive display and were unlucky not to have turned the tables. For the winners, Miss N. Witchell was splendid in the pivotal berth while Miss Mona Shand did good work in attack.

·

The CB.A. Ladies caused the biggest upset of the afternoon when they eliminated the much-fancied YM.C.A. Ladies' seven by the only goal of the match scored after ex- tra time by Miss Iris Woolley who gave a rousing display.

The losers were outplayed, the. winners combining much better as a team. Miss Marie Smith, who was playing in the unaccustomed I position of half-back, gave Miss F. Best, the C.B.A. right winger, too much freedom and this eventually-i proved the downfall of the Y. Ladies. Miss Azn Fowler, full-back for the losers, was too prone to take unnecessary risks when effecting clearances.

Saints' Bad Luck

St. Andrew's Ladies, who drew a bye, met the C.B.S. team in the semi-final and lost by the only goal netted by Miss Shand, St. Andrew's showed far superior play in the second half of this tie and both Miss Phylls Gittins and Miss Florrie Wong had bad luck with some fine attempta in front of their opponents' 'citadel.

DANIELS AND

THREE FIGURE MARK

BY NEW L.B.W.

Two centuries were scored in the games played over the week- end but neither of these was in the senior league. One was by H. C. Daniels for the Civil Service Juniors in z rather remarkable match (league) with Kowloon Seconds, and the other was by Lt; Weedon for the Middlesex Regiment against the Seaforths on Sunday. There was a full programme of games in both Leagues and I propose to deal only with the First Division In 10-day's notes, leaving the remaining matches for Friday.

The Senior League is definitely in a very interesting stage. The half-way period just reached Ands the Indians heading the table with 10 points from four matches (won three; drew one). Hong Kong Cricket Club, Kowloon and Craigengower are joint- seconds with eight points (played four, won two. drew two). The Indians, however, are by no means out of the woods yet. as they still have to meet the Club and Kowloon. not to mention Civil Service; who are quite capable of springing an unpleasant surprise or most teams. The other elevens can safely be left out of the reckoning.

All the four teams mentioned on on Saturday but neither the Club nor, Kowloon had much to spare. The Club's batting was 1 queer contradiction. Two wickets were down for 11 runs, the next put on 68, and then the whole side were out "for 142.

MARSHALL'S ENOCK

satch. And so, it proved. Soon after he retired. His knee had gone again. A substitute fielded for him for the rest of the innings and though he pluckily went in to bat he only made one' run.
