The medal was the William O. Stillman medal, presented to the brave lad by the American Humane Society, states the "North China Daily News."

When the ttl group who were privileged to attend the ceremony had gathered in the Consul- General's office. Mr. Gauss said that on behalf of the American Humane Society. he had been ask- ed to present the medal for conspi- cuous gallantry in the rescue of his roets from the war-torn area. "I want you to know." continued Mr. Gauss, "that what you have done has greatly impressed many of your fellow animal lovers in America, who send you their best wishes to accompany this medal.“

Escaping from an Indian watch- man who was detalled to keep him safely in a boiler room, he cam- pleted his trip by walking two miles through Yangtszepoo until finally he reached his home-and his pets. These he found tarred and feathered, the work of a fiend who had condemned them, so he thought to a slow, agonizing death

Tearfully he embraced the old quartette, half feathered fowl, half mongrel dog, and meeting with a kindly Settlement police sergeant his troubles were at an end, and. be reached home in safety.

AN INDIAN HARVEST

An excellent crop of pinion nuts has been harvested this fall in southern Utah by members of the Navajo and Piute Indian tribes, forest service omcials report. The annual harvest centres around Blanding. Utah, in and adjacent to the Lasal national forest.

The Indians follow time-honour- ed harvest methods. Placing
