Governor's Cup

BY RIGHT-HALF

Why did Costa refuse to take the penalty kick for the Hong Kong Football Association side against the Chinese Amateur Ath- letic Federation in the Governor's Cup match on Caroline Bill on Saturday.

That is the question hundreds of football fans must be ask- ing themselves, for, with due respect to Bright, the result might have been diferent had Costa taken the spot kick, and the Asso- elation might have lived to "fight another day."

As it was, Bright took the kick when the score was 2-1 against the Association and a goal at that stage would have made all the difference but Bright shot right into the hands of Tam Kwan- ' kon, who had no difficulty in clearing.

And so concluded the Governor's. but even in the opening minutes, Cup series for the 1937-38 season with a full-side and one goal up, with the Hong Kong Chinese the Association team somehow Amateur Athletic Federation lacked the combination that is so worthy winners nf the muco- necessary in a match-winning side. coveted trophy.

ASSOCIATION'S BAD LUCK In fairness to the Association eleven, however, it must be stated that they were dogged by bad luck and if Rowlands had not been so brilliant between the sticks, the against them might have been bigger.

score

It is true that they drew at blood when Bickford scored

somewhat tacky goal. I say lucky because with only Tam to beat, Bickford missed the ball when he attempted to tap it pass the goalle and it was fortunate for his aide that the leather hit his knee and 'trickled" into the net.

The latter won by the nar- cow margin of two goals to one but, in attack at least, their su periority was more marked than the scores indicated. It was only the great K.LT.C. defence that robbed them of a bigger victory,

Karnail Singh and Attar Bingh; full-backs, were soundness and solidity personifed, but the versatile Rajput attack, led by the seemingly omnipresent Lt. Pritam Nath, got past them a great- er number of times than they would probably care to remember, and then it was Ramzan alone that stemmed the tide. Again and again the Kowloon Indian goalie brought off fine saves, many of which would have got past most goalies. With the two shots that did beat him he had no chance whatever.
