DERBY PROSPECTS DISCUSSED
BY LAST QUARTER'
With the annual racing carnival only approximately six weeks away, Interest amongst racing enthusiasts will soon be taking con crete form and training performatices - keenly followed. Although none of the new ponies have been called upon to show of their best, owners will undoubtedly be putting the respective candidates through their paces in the near future with the view of trying them out prior to the closing of entries on Saturday next, January 15, 1938, at 3 p.m. The annual race meeting, consisting of five days sport opens on Saturday, February 19, and continues on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, February 21, 22 and 23, respectively, with the closing day on Saturday, February 26. Judging from the ponies now under- going preparation the entries will be on the large side, with the con- sequent well; supported. Belds, both as regards starters and pari- ' mutüel returns. In addition, a strong contingent of Northern jockeys will be present, including "auch well known stalwarts as Messrs. V. V. Needa, F. Marshall, D. S. Li, H. Maitland, C. Encarnaca, and T. L... Wong.
There are several changes in the racing programme as compared "with previous years. On the open- ing day. the Wongnetchong Stakes, 1st. Section, is to be run as the 5th Race, and at approximately 1:30 p.m. This feature will be greatly
the appreciated
" by racing: public 15 subscrip- tion griffin races are always popu-. "lar and the change will allow time for punters to get down to the
course and Invest in an event that invariably provides good returns.
The Curragh Handicap, a mile event for "C" Class China ponies is now down for decision on the opening day (10th race) Instead of "op the second day as in former yours. The Old Course Handicap China ponies has been deleted from the programme altogether
