ELEPHANTIASIS

IN MALAYA··

Research Work In

Riverine Areas

Dr. Poynton and Mr. Hodgkin. of the Institute of Medical Re-

at search, Kuala Lumpur, are present in Sabak Bernam working in connection with the incidence of 'Filaria.

This disease, which is said to be caused by the bite of a particular kind of mosquito, is common along the Bernam River. It is the cause of the familiar elephant leg 'seen in several of the labourers work- ing in the area. involved.

The Malayan Medical authorities are doing their best to stamp out elephantiasis. In July 1936 Dr. J. J. C. Buckley, on the Department of Helminthology at the London School of Tropical Medicine, tour- ed the Hernam riverine area and collected some 40 specimens of blood from Infected persons. In October of the same year another visit was made by the Malayan medical authoritles and some 125 specimens

collected. The were medical people have to work aga- Inst odds. Though during the first visit some 400 turned out for Inspection only 40 of them acceded to the request for operation. One of the infected persons has been taken to the" headquarters of I. M. R. for experimental purposes.

It is believed that proper nutri- tion would strengthen the populace so as to be in a better position to resist the disease. Experiments in feeding the people in the in-. fected area on a balanced diet. to supply what vitamins are lacking. have also been carried out.

The investigation is at present concentrated on the Bernam River on the boundary between Perak and Selangor, where a Boeing Airplane, ......

At present the prevention and treatment of filariasis leave much to be desired. but there is the prospect that with investigation and experimental work valuable results may be achieved.

In other parts of the world, India, Africa, and the west Indies, the disease has proved a scourge that has seriously affected labour.

The minutes of a recent meet- ing of the Malaria Advisory Board, F.MS.. give interesting details of the work of the Board in its fight against the scourge.

Regarding the investigation of anophelines, on the Selangor coast," It is stated that the investigations
