PAGE FOR THE CHURCHES

THE CHOSEN PEOPLE

(BY SCRUTATOR)

The vicissitudes of Jewish history contributed mightily towards the creation and development of their religion. as we have seen. The Exile, which we must pass over thus briefly, forced one important and significant development- separated religion from the state and was in no small measure responsible for the rise of the great succession of prophets. With the

return of the nation from Extle the era of the prophets closed. and the leaders of the community. be- came men of narrow mind and legal temper, who were more in- tent on ritual rightness and racial purity than upon the great things of their prophetic faith.

About a century later the com- pleted Law was imposed upon the people, and conformity with it ex- hausted all that was contained in the religious and moral ideal. What remained of prophecy toot on more and more the character of the Apocalyptic. The present age was seen to be rapidly growing worse and worse under the domina- tion of angelic powers largely hos- tile to Israel, the coming age would be ushered in by sudden catas- trophe when the brutal oppressive powers would be crushed and the Israel of the Most High would en- ter her inheritance. The Apocalyp- tlc, despite its seeming irrelevance. did great service to Israel stimulat- ing the faith and hope, and brac- ing the courage of the people when everything seemed going against them and they were tempted to. despair.

LEGALISM AND APOCALYPTIC

Of course it would be unjust to ̈ suggest that post-exilic Israel had - nothing more than legalism and apocalyptic. Piety, both individu- al and collective occasionally soar- ed to great heights. and Jewish spints could touch with sensitive fingers the deepest of human ex- periences, as is witnessed by many of the compositions in the Book of Psalms, and illustrated in the Book of Job. Those of us who have least sympathy with legalism must at least admit that. Its discipline. and the firm compactness of the

state which it created. enabled Judaism to survive the terrible severities of Antiochus Epiphanes In his attempt to crush the religion. It nerved martyrs to suffer and bernes to fraist. and enabled Judaism to survive the disintegrat- Ing effect of the penetrating Greek spirit.

.

Looking back then over the whole history of the Jewish religion from its origin to the time of Christ, we may say that it yielded primarily a conception of God and an ex- pertence of God. That there may have been other gods matters noth- Ing. but that Israel was pledged supremely to Jehovah alone was a

CARE FOR WEAK AND POOR/ God" "Olving Glory to God in St. Andrew's Church, Kowloon:-committed all judgement unto the

The qualitles attributed to God were gradually apprehended in a deeper and purer way. Holiness. from being aloofness came to be unapproachable moral perfection Waywardness, and unreliability gradually recede from His charac- ter Love, so finely portrayed by Hoshea, came to be love for Israel. That other nations are also the

object of His love is revealed by the Second Isaiah, and in the Book of Jonah. His care for the weak

and the poor and the oppressed is continually emphasised. There is

one God and He is Holy. He is the God of Israel, the Creator, the Lord of Nature and History" and thetr only Arbiter: He 13 from Eternity to Eternity the mighty God who foresees the end from the beginning, and knows the most secret thoughts of man. All this is expressed in the Hebrew Scrip-

tures.

The conception of man naturally varies; sometimes he is frail and fleeting, sometimes strong and a being of "great destiny, but always he is in the image of God, formed for the blessedness of commumlori with Him. At its best, the Old Testament knows a deep Intimate | fellowship with God and expresses it in incomparably beautiful lan- ›guage. but speaking generally, grave. limitation must, be admitted. The religion of Israel also created a high ethical ideal which it em- bodied in the law, and so the stan- dard of conduct among the Jews was higher than that current in the heathen world; the sense of sin may have been acute but there was the divine mercy and forgive- ness: even the sacrificial system, though it could not be carried over into Christianity, supplied averiues for, the interpretation of the work of the Redeemer. And in the ques- tion of life after death, the Israel of the time of Jesus had advanced beyond the view expressed in the

Old Testament. But it in clear that

the Old Testament was in d'unique way, the preparation for the, ad- vent of Christ.

The Old Testament and the New Testament are one, because revela- tion is hot primarily the com- munication of religious truth; it is something far deeper and more

complex. It is the self-unveiling

of God in history. This is the principle which binds the Old Testament and the New together into a unity-not the unity of an identical theology and ethic, but

the unity of a long and continuous

process, with a vast diference be- tween the beginning and the end.

The Lesson Sermon will also include the following passages from the Christian "Science Text- book, "Science and Health with Key to the Ecriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy:" "If sickness is real, it belongs to Immortality; if true, it is a part of Truth. Would you attempt with drugs, or without, to destroy a qualtion or condition of Truth? But if sin and sickness are illusions, the awakening from this mortal dream, or illusion, will bring us into health, holiness, and Immortality. This awakening is the forever coming of Christ, the ad- vanced appearing of Truth, which casts out error and heals the sick. This is the salvation, which comes through God, the divine, Principal Love, as demonstrated by Jesus."
