LEAD MINE HANDICAP Mr. Donald Black registered his third win of the day when he rode Sir Vandeleur Grayburn's Tyne to victory to pay.. $12.80. in the Lead Mine "Handicap. the favourite, Potentate (Mr. B. It was a very good win for Mr., Black who had to ride very hard. as he was strongly challenged for the last 100 yards.

There was not much in the race, and with the exception of the first three ponies the others did not show up well, the going being extremely slow.

. Courting Eve set the pace for the greater part of the race while Strathroy was kept in the fourth position until the Football Stands when it moved up to second place. It went into the lead after passing the Rock and although it was lead- ing by fully four lengths at the Village Bend, Lancashire. spoke of fifty years of work for the movement. He gave a short re- sume of the early struggles of their great leader, General Booth., and of the favaluable help given throughout her life by his wife Katherine Booth

He told how the first meetings were held in a tent, and when the tent, was blown down by an Octo ber gale the leader decided to carry on in the open air, and so also pointed out started the famous street corner meetings. He how the fact of meetings being held thus brought them within reach of the lowest and poorest types of humanity, the drunkards and the down-and-outs and what wonderful work was done in the saving of these unhappy folk.

He then spoke of the bitter op- and position of the Brewery keepers of public houses, who teared their protits would dwindle, and of the pressure they attempted to bring to bear in order to stop the reform movement. He gave a glowing account of the spread of this great movement overseas, and mentioned that there are now forty thousand methbers of the Salva- tion Army, that meetings are now held in one hundred and eight different parts of the world, and that at these meetings 87 different languages are heard.

His speech was most inspiring, and the whole audience listened with rapt attention.

Five hundred members of the Royal Welch Fusiliers attended the fancy dress dance held at the Hote! Cecil on Saturday night to 'cele-. brate the Coronation. By kind per- mission of Lt. Col. D. M. Borchard and Officers the dance band of the regiment played.
