His face told as little as the sphynx excepting for an occasional screwing of "the eyelids when the pace was hot; and his boxing was If Oriental cunning, yet of the best classic style.

Lynch spent 15 rounds not on chasing a retreating opponent, but In trying to alt an opponent who stood toe to toe, there before als eyes, yer as elusiv. as a shadow.
By body balance, swaying. slight move of the head, or un- canny intuition of Lynch's rapid thought, he stood up to the dogged Hitle Scot, the hardest hitting t man in the world and defled him to land a punch.
Lynch had always paved his vic- taries by a series of heavy coun- ters. He has a trick of persuading his opponent to lead so that he can counter with shattering effect with hooks to the stomach. Mon- tana, it turned out, had a similar style, and it was he who forred Lynch to attack.

I should estimate that Lynch missed three times out of four. He won in fact by sheer merit for forcing the fight. Many rounds he won by the narrowest margin pos- siblea margin

There were, of course, many co- casions when Lynch landed with times. great force. There were feet!g moments. when a powerful hook to the jaw seemed to have unsteadied Montana, when one saw that curious flicker of the long narrow eyelids of the Filipino.
Lynch always followed up, some times desperately eager to land a really damaging punch. He never succeeded and there was never any further sign that the trouble to Montana had been anything bait imaginary.

as Lynch rushed in, and others, vicious swings to the body this was the one real weakness in his otherwise perfect equipment.
A NEW LYNCH
We discovered a new Lynch, a Lynch who can box as well as fight. Hitherto the Glasgow: flyweight had been regarded as one who conquered
weight by sheer

It was fortunate for him that his genius went a good deal
farther than that.
He had to box to win this world title. It was in the 7th round, after spending the previous six in rather futile efforts, that Lynch decided to attempt the orthodox. He shot six straight lefts to Mon- tana's mouth and everyone found its mark
Towards the end he tired and Montana, boxing at the same speed throughout, seized his chance. to attack
Then it was that Lynch showed his quickness on thought. He kept Montatu guessing by crowding in on him and generally making it Impossible for him to use his su perior speed and stamina.
There was to clinching- it was Just clever boxing. There was no doubt in my mind when the last round started that Lynch had won bar accidents. He made doubly sure, however, by packing all his remaining strength into one last glorious round.
Montana clearly hoped to do some damage at the eleventh hour. He found himself outboxed and Outpunched by a human hurricane.
